Citizens 'Info: Magdeburg invites you to the residents' meeting on August 27th!
Magdeburg, Deutschland - In Magdeburg, an important appointment is just around the corner! On August 27, 2025, a residents' meeting will take place organized by Mayor Simone Borris. Here the citizens of the districts of Brückfeld, Berliner Chaussee and Herrenkrug are invited to express their concerns. These three residential areas combine over 7,000 inhabitants with different structures and interests, which makes the event particularly promising. Jörg Vierhaus, spokesman for the community work working group, emphasizes the large number of topics that will be discussed, including more green areas, less noise, cleaner roads and a better flow of traffic.
To prepare the discussion, the citizens can submit their concerns by June 30, 2025 by email to gwa-ostelbien@gmx.de. It would be ideal if you would also add photos to illustrate. The contributions collected are forwarded directly to the mayor's office, so that everyone has a voice in the decision -making processes. The exact location of the meeting is still announced, but one thing is certain: This event offers an excellent opportunity to actively participate in the future of the eastern districts.
Citizen participation in the upswing
The upcoming residents' meeting is only one of many signs of the growing commitment of the city of Magdeburg in terms of citizen participation. Already on December 7, 2023, the city council decided to have a comprehensive concept for citizen participation entitled "Participation with effect". This concept emerged in a process of several months within the city administration and aims to expand the opportunities for citizens to help shape and increase transparency. A central component of the project is the creation of a team for citizen participation directly at the mayor's office.
The concept also provides for the introduction of an online platform to start in April 2024 in order to facilitate the overview of ongoing and upcoming participation procedures. These measures are part of the efforts to improve communication between the city administration and civil society and to enable the participants a clear and structured participation.
challenges of urban development
But where there is light, as is well known, shadows are also. The requirements for urban development and infrastructure projects in Germany are growing steadily. Citizens are increasingly expressing criticism and the desire for more participation. Growing conflicts about large projects and the changed roles within local politics are just a few of the challenges with which cities are confronted. A better interaction between local politics, administration and civil society is therefore becoming more and more urgent. Continuous citizen participation is a key to mastering these challenges.
The city of Magdeburg reacts to these developments with various forms of citizen participation, which are underpinned by empirical studies. In this context, the upcoming residents' meeting is not only an event for discussion, but also a step towards a more transparent and effective citizen participation.
interested citizens should not miss the chance of contributing their concerns and thus actively contributing to the further development of their city. It remains exciting how the discussions will develop on August 27th!
