On August 14, 2025, a solemn event took place in the Magdeburg State Chancellery, at which Prime Minister Dr. Reiner Haseloff honored four citizens with the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. This award is a great honor for many and recognizes significant contributions to the common good.
Among those honored is the renowned archaeologist Prof. Dr. Harald Meller, who was honored for his outstanding achievements in archaeological research and cultural education. He is not only director of the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology in Saxony-Anhalt, but has also become known nationwide for his important excavation finds, such as the famous Nebra Sky Disk. His commitment as a cultural ambassador for Saxony-Anhalt is particularly recognized by this honor Dubist Hall reported.
Various honors
The event not only honored Meller: Annemarie Rockmann, who was the local mayor of Aschersleben for over 20 years, also received the Cross of Merit. She is particularly committed to the preservation and tourist use of Freckleben Castle. Her dedication to cultural and social issues is a shining example of the importance of volunteer work.
Also honored were Ruth Salomon, a 90-year-old retired nurse, and Joachim Willamowski, a 77-year-old agricultural engineer and mayor. Salomon has been impressively involved in blood donation in the Salzland district, while Willamowski has been a volunteer in his community for more than 30 years and is committed to monument preservation projects. Their achievements show how much passion and commitment goes into volunteer work.
