Burglary in Magdeburg: Police are looking for witnesses after a brazen daytime robbery!
Last week there was a worrying increase in home break-ins in Magdeburg, putting residents on alert. Specifically, there was a burglary in an apartment on Abendstrasse on August 8th, which took place between 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Unknown perpetrators forced their way through the apartment entrance door and searched for valuables in all rooms. Small amounts of cash and four-figure jewelry were stolen. The injured 30-year-old resident discovered the break-in at around 3:30 p.m. and immediately informed the police, who then secured evidence at the crime scene and initiated an investigation. The police are now asking the public for help: Anyone who has seen anything suspicious during this time or has information about the perpetrators can call 0391/546-3295 or via the e-precinct, as Magdeburg Klickt reports.
However, this break-in is not the only incident that rocked the city in the past week. On August 7th, an apartment on Olvenstedter Straße in Stadtfeld Ost was targeted by burglars. Here too, the perpetrators managed to force their way in and steal high-quality watches. The second burglary on Abendstrasse confirms the sad reality that, according to Tag24, residential burglaries occur quite frequently and can take place not only in gated residential complexes, but also in single-family homes.
The numbers speak for themselves
A look at the statistics shows that residential burglaries are increasing again overall in Germany. There were approximately 119,000 thefts in 2023, including 77,800 residential burglaries, a worrying increase compared to the years before the coronavirus pandemic. The risk of a break-in is particularly higher in urban areas, such as Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg. In cities like Mülheim an der Ruhr, the burglary rate is an alarming 283 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In comparison, things look different in Fürth with only 33 cases. The clearance rate of 14.9% for residential burglaries also shows that many of the crimes remain unsolved, which can severely impact the population's sense of security. This situation gives cause for thought, as the clearance rate for other crimes is around 58.4%, as Statista reports.
With a noticeable increase in crime since the pandemic, residents should be particularly vigilant. So if you notice anything unusual - be it suspicious people or vehicles - don't hesitate to inform the police. Safety is everyone's concern, and together we can help make our neighborhoods safer.
