The shocking act caused huge waves in the city. Just four days after the incident, a vigil was held for the woman who was killed. Around 60 people gathered to give space to their memory and the issue of structural violence against women. The vigil was organized by several Magdeburg women's alliances who wanted to draw attention to the important issue.
The Syrian-German Cultural Association in Magdeburg has been confronted with a wave of hostility since the incident and has strongly condemned the crime. The chairman of the association, Saeed Saeed, emphasized the need for a dialogue between Germans and immigrants in order to reduce misunderstandings and prejudices.
A worrying trend
In the context of such acts of violence, it is important to take a look at the current figures. According to a report by the BKA, there was an alarming increase in gender-specific crimes against women in 2023. What is particularly striking is the increase in homicides, which in almost 70% of all cases were committed as part of domestic violence. This makes it clear that there is a need for action to better protect women from acts of violence.
The report highlights that most suspects are male and that the number of unreported cases of violence against women may be even higher than the available figures suggest. Digital violence against women has also increased, highlighted by a 25% increase this year. Preventive measures must be intensified to ensure a safe life for women.
