FCM celebrates 30 years of European Cup triumph – a look back at the legend!
Another chapter in the proud history of... 1. FC Magdeburg was pitched on October 3, 1990 when the team played its 70th European Cup game. At that time, the team from the GDR took a remarkable step when they traveled to Finland as an all-German team. This trip was more than just a football game; it symbolized the changing times as the players proudly posed with both national flags for a memorial captured in the Finnish newspaper Lapin Kansa.
The FCM had previously qualified for the UEFA Cup as third in the table in the last GDR league season. Despite the departure of important players such as Detlef Schößler and Heiko Bonan, who said goodbye before the start of the season, Wolfgang Steinbach returned to the club after a year. At the same time, Siegmund Mewes took over as coach after Joachim Streich left the club to pursue new paths at Eintracht Braunschweig.
A look back at the European Cup Winners' Cup
But this was only a small section in the long and successful history of 1. FC Magdeburg in the European Cup. The real highlight came in 1974, when the FCM European Cup Winners' Cup won - and was the only GDR club to go down in the history books. In the 14th edition of the competition, the Magdeburgers triumphed in the final on May 8, 1974 in De Kuip, Rotterdam, against the famous AC Milan and secured the prestigious title. The audience for the final was only 4641, which was quite low for such an event.
The coach Heinz Krügel led the team confidently through the tournament. In an exciting final, an own goal from Enrico Lanzi in the 42nd minute and a goal from Wolfgang Seguin in the 74th minute scored the decisive goals for the FCM, who were celebrated as true cup winners. Jupp Heynckes from Borussia Mönchengladbach became the tournament's top scorer with 8 goals.
Ups and downs: recent developments
However, these successes were not without setbacks. The 1990/91 season was disappointing for the FCM as the team missed qualification for the Bundesliga and Regionalliga and slipped into amateur football. Fortunately, 2023 has once again become a joyful year for fans as 1. FC Magdeburg celebrates its 60th anniversary on December 22nd. In the new season, those responsible hope that the FCM will go on business again and cause a stir in the upper leagues.
The club's recent history clearly shows how fast things can happen in football. With a strong team, a committed coach and the support of loyal fans, there will certainly be a lot to be heard from this traditional club. With a generous amount of patience and determination, we can look forward to what the next few years will hold for 1. FC Magdeburg.
