Magdeburg embarrasses itself in the derby: Münster wins 5-0!
There was a thrilling encounter between 1. FC Magdeburg and SC Preußen Münster in the Avnet Arena today, which resulted in a clear favorite. Kick-off took place at 1:30 p.m. under the direction of FIFA referee Dr. Robert Kampka. Magdeburg, coached by Petrik Sander, played against Alexander Ende from Münster. Historically, the record shows that Magdeburg won the first six competitive duels, but in the last four encounters there was only one win, including a disastrous 0:5 in May this year.
As far as 1. FC Magdeburg is concerned, their current form looks anything but rosy. With just four points from the first nine games, the club is at the bottom of the table, weaker than ever in a second division season. The goal drought is dramatic: a total of five league games without a goal, which is a negative club record. Despite a third-best value of 134 shots, the players only managed a meager seven goals, which leads to a negative expected goals value of -6.7.
Münster's recovery under a new coach
SC Preußen Münster, on the other hand, presents itself completely differently. In the current season, the club can boast a remarkable 15 second division games in which they always scored at least one goal, which is the league's best. Known for their controlled style of play, they lead the passing statistics with 613 passes and a pass rate of 87%. They are also at the top in ball possession statistics with 61.1%. A downer for Münster is the suspension of their defense chief Paul Jaeckel, who is out after his fifth yellow card. However, this defensive vulnerability could prove crucial in such an important game to stay in the league.
The first minutes of the game showed that Münster was willing to take control. With goals from Kyerewaa and Lorenz as well as further pressure from Hendrix, Magdeburg was trailing 3-0 by halftime. A look back reveals that Magdeburg was able to achieve 62% possession of the ball in the first half, but still did not create any clear chances. In the 55th minute, Münster increased their lead to 4-0 with a goal from Kyerewaa, which further dampened Magdeburg's hopes.
A bitter defeat for Magdeburg
Until the final whistle, 1. FC Magdeburg's performance was not satisfactory. Coach Sander had chosen the same eleven as in the last game, which turned out to be the wrong decision. Players like Nollenberger and Mrowca tried in vain to turn the tide with shots on goal. After the final whistle, the longed-for goal failed to materialize and Magdeburg suffered a bitter 5-0 defeat in the promotion battle. A disappointed Teixeira and Pfeiffer expressed their displeasure, the latter even receiving a yellow card.
For Münster it was an important sign with regard to staying in the league and the debut of coach Christian Pander could be seen as a successful start. Although some observations from the game suggest that Münster remain vulnerable when it comes to their set pieces - they have already conceded nine goals from set pieces - they are sending a strong signal to the competition with this performance.
The game could not be seen on free TV, but was broadcast live on Sky and also followed in the live ticker on Sport1. The next duel will show whether Magdeburg can learn from this clear defeat and fight back or whether Münster can continue the positive trend.
