Magdeburg triumphs: eight nominations for the EHF team of the season!

On June 15, 2025, SC Magdeburg was crowned winner of the EHF Champions League for the fifth time. On the playing field of the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, they defeated the Füchse Berlin with a clear 32:26 and thus continued their impressive performance in the final tournament. In the semi-final, the Magdeburg team pushed the reigning champions, FC Barcelona, out of the competition with a late goal.

Particularly noteworthy was the performance of goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez Ferrer, who repeatedly made the Berlin attack desperate with 18 saves on 42 shots. Together with the game's top scorer, Gisli Thorgeir Kristjansson, who scored eight goals, the team from Magdeburg put in a strong performance. Felix Claar and Ómar Ingi Magnusson each contributed six goals, while the Foxes initially led but quickly lost control of the game.

Nominations for the team of the season

The impressive performance of SC Magdeburg is also reflected in the nominations for the EHF Team of the Season. There are a total of eight nominations for Magdeburg, spread across seven players. These include Magnus Saugstrup and Thibaut Briet, who are nominated in the best defender category. In comparison, the Füchse Berlin have six nominees, but come away empty-handed in the right winger and goalkeeper categories.

SC Magdeburg is therefore in competition with well-known clubs. SG Flensburg-Handewitt, the winner of the EHF European League, has three nominations. THW Kiel follows with two, while both VfL Gummersbach and MT Melsungen have each nominated one player. What makes it even more attractive are the nominations from international clubs such as HBC Nantes with seven and FC Barcelona with four nominations.

The importance of the Champions League

The EHF Champions League 2023/24, the 64th men's event, has more than just sporting relevance for the participating teams. It also provides a stage for some of the best handball players in the world. The European Handball Federation (EHF) organizes this event, which is now one of the most prestigious in handball sports.

The defending champions, SC Magdeburg, have made a name for themselves not only through last year's triumph, but also through the impressive way in which they have been able to assert themselves in the current season. Fans can look forward to seeing how the team performs in the coming games, especially in the next editions of the Champions League, which begin in the group phase in September 2023.

As a reminder: The next EHF Final Four will also take place in Cologne on June 8th and 9th, 2024. The anticipation of these high-class encounters can be felt throughout the city. Cologne remains a center for top handball, and the local fan community will certainly continue to support their teams loudly.
