Magdeburg's star Hugonet calls for a turnaround after a change of coach!
On July 21, 2025, the fans of 1. FC Magdeburg are looking forward to the upcoming start of the season on August 3. However, the anticipation of the opening game against Braunschweig is accompanied by worries. Leading player Jean Hugonet expressed these concerns, clearly addressing the responsibility of his teammates. In a new role as a central defender in a back four, he describes the importance of each player being able to use his skills in order to build the necessary self-confidence. Hugonet emphasizes that the tactical changes of the new coaching team under Markus Fiedler are not yet fully effective and that it will take time until everyone is at the same level as last season. Despite the difficult test results of defeats against Zurich (0:2) and Essen (2:5) as well as a draw against Chemnitz (1:1), Hugonet remains optimistic and hopes that his teammates can regain their form in the next two weeks before the season really gets going. In his new role, he sees himself as centrally involved in the game structure and adaptable in defense.
The change of coach has stirred emotions in the club. Christian Titz, who has led the club as coach since February 2021 and brought it to the championship in the 3rd division in 2022, is leaving 1. FC Magdeburg and moving to Hannover 96. Titz received a two-year contract there, while his assistant coach André Kilian is also moving with him. Managing Director Sport Otmar Schork described the departure as a “blow in the neck” and emphasized that Titz’s term of 1,581 days is the third longest in the club’s history. Only Dirk Heyne and Jens Härtel held longer terms of office. Under Titz, the FCM achieved 5th place in the 2nd Bundesliga last season, which places high demands on the new coach.
A new wind is blowing in the coaching team
Markus Fiedler, who previously coached the second team at VfB Stuttgart and was promoted to the 3rd league, is now taking over the fortunes of the FCM. He led his first training session on June 23rd. Many fans have mixed feelings about the upcoming games and hope that Fiedler can drive the team's positive development forward. Hugonet is nevertheless confident that a return to successful form can be achieved.
1. FC Magdeburg is facing an exciting but also challenging season. The mixture of new beginnings and awareness of the existing challenges will shape the coming weeks. It remains to be seen whether the FCM will find its way back to the league's top spots. There is great anticipation for the first game and the fans are hoping for a successful start to the season.
