Topping-out ceremony in Magdeburg: New child protection center for 5.8 million euros!
A new child protection center will soon open its doors in Magdeburg-Stadtfeld. After the ceremonial topping-out ceremony that took place on Tuesday, construction work is well underway. The center, which is scheduled to be completed in May 2027, will be built on Wilhelm-Kobelt-Straße and will offer space for up to 50 children and young people up to the age of 17 who need to be temporarily removed from their family environment. But it's not just children in crisis situations who should find help here - young people who come forward themselves are also very welcome. The youth welfare office can look after the children for up to twelve weeks, which gives them the time they need to regenerate.
With an investment of around 5.8 million euros, this important project is being financed from the city budget. There is no financial support from the federal or state governments. The construction contract, which was signed in May, includes the cooperation of the bidding group Wilhelm Wallbrecht and Industriebau Wernigerode GmbH, which will provide all construction work as the total contractor. The mayor of Magdeburg, Simone Borris, signed the contract in the Old Town Hall after a Europe-wide negotiation process. Construction work is already on schedule and should begin this year, they report MDR News.
Planned architecture and use
The two-story building will offer a usable area of around 2,000 m², divided into three parts. The central entrance and the administration area are located in the middle part of the building, while the living areas are positioned to the side. The area for anonymous overnight stays, which has separate access, is particularly important. This well-thought-out planning offers children and young people a protected space in which they can feel safe. The Press service emphasizes that both the ground floor area and the other rooms are designed to best take the needs of young people into account.
The construction of the child protection center represents an important step in crisis management for many families in Magdeburg. The increasing demand is being responded to with a targeted offer for a wide range of age groups. It will be exciting to see how the project develops and how the first children can be accepted into the new center.
