Speed camera car brings more safety in Lutherstadt Eisleben!
In Lutherstadt Eisleben, a charming part of the Mansfeld-Südharz district, the city administration has put a speed camera into service. Mayor Carsten Staub (independent) confirmed that the city has invested a generous 130,000 euros in technology and vehicles to increase road safety. The speed camera can take speed measurements from within the vehicle as well as with a mobile device placed on a tripod at the side of the road.
“It’s not just about income for us,” emphasized Staub in an interview with MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT. Rather, the measure is intended to have a preventive effect and help raise awareness of speed in road traffic. In close cooperation with the police, the measures are also intended to help minimize dangerous situations and the risk of accidents.
Speed checks, like those carried out in other German cities, are a central part of the road safety strategy. The police and local regulatory authorities carry out both stationary and mobile checks using various modern technologies. In addition to radar systems and laser measuring devices, video tracking systems and light barriers are also used to ensure that traffic violations are consistently punished. The focus is on combating speeding, which has been a significant problem in Germany since the first speed cameras were introduced in the 1950s.
The consequences of speeding can have significant consequences. According to the federal catalog of fines, even small violations can lead to fines and points on your driver's license. Here is an overview of the possible sanctions for speeding in urban areas:
| Exceedance (km/h) | Fine (€) | Points | Driving ban |
|---|---|---|---|
| Until 10 | 30 | 0 | – |
| 11 – 15 | 50 | 0 | – |
| 16 – 20 | 70 | 0 | – |
| 21 – 25 | 115 | 1 | – |
| 26 – 30 | 180 | 1 | 1 month |
| 31 – 40 | 260 | 1 | 2 months |
| 41 – 50 | 400 | 1 | 2 months |
| 51 – 60 | 560 | 1 | 2 months |
| 61 – 70 | 700 | 1 | 3 months |
| Over 70 | 800 | 1 | 3 months |
These fines can quickly become apparent to most drivers, because compliance with speed limits is no joke. The pressure can be particularly high for novice drivers: For example, anyone who drives 21 km/h too fast in urban areas will have to expect an extension of their probationary period and have to take part in an advanced seminar.
It therefore seems urgent to understand that speed monitoring is not just a measure to increase revenue, but primarily serves the safety of all road users. Given the high number of traffic accidents, everyone should do their part to ensure road safety.
It remains to be seen how the new measures in Lutherstadt Eisleben will affect driving behavior in the region. Will this cause citizens to pay more attention to their speed? We are excited about the developments!
