Raid exposes cannabis plantation: three men taken into custody!
An intensive operation by over 20 officers from the state riot police resulted in the discovery of a cannabis cultivation plantation in the Mansfeld-Südharz district on July 9, 2025. The police had previously obtained a search warrant from a judge and were able to seize around 550 cannabis plants in different stages of growth as well as 22 kilograms of consumable cannabis during the operation. The emergency services also found various utensils for growing and processing drugs, including cell phones and cash. Three men, aged 27, 29 and 42 and originally from Albania, were provisionally arrested - the public prosecutor's office has already announced that it will apply for pre-trial detention orders for the suspects
.
As Hallanzeiger reports, these arrests are part of extensive investigations by the Central Criminal Investigation Department of the PI Halle (Saale). The suspicion that led the officers to get the search warrant is clear: the men are said to be involved in the trade in cannabis products. In view of the current legal developments in the field of cannabis, the discussion about such operations and their proportionality is becoming increasingly louder.
Legal aspects: What does the new consumer cannabis law mean?
In recent years, the legal landscape for cannabis in Germany has changed, particularly with the entry into force of the new Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG). Even though trafficking in cannabis remains a criminal offense, the penalties have been reduced compared to the previous regulations. According to the BGH decision of October 29, 2024, unauthorized trading will be strictly regulated, which means that violations can now be punished more leniently under certain circumstances
.
The changes could also potentially impact the investigation into the current case. If the men committed these crimes under the KCanG, the sentence could be interpreted in favor of the defendants. Otherwise, anyone who deals in cannabis without complying with the relevant licenses or requirements will continue to face severe penalties - up to 5 years in prison for large quantities. Possession of marijuana is currently punishable by up to five years in prison, with regulations becoming stricter from April 1, 2024
.
Fears and uncertainties among consumers
More and more people are wondering what rights they have if their homes are searched, especially if they have fresh marijuana goods. According to [Anwalt.de]. It is important to be aware of your rights, especially since the Constitution provides strong privacy protections. A search warrant is required - unless there is imminent danger, for example if evidence could be destroyed.
It therefore remains to be seen what specific impact the reassessment of the cannabis law will have on future searches and possibly also on ongoing investigations. The legislature will certainly be required to create clear guidelines in order to reconcile both public safety interests and the rights of consumers.
