Christmas tree felling in Mansfeld: A festival of fir trees one last time!

Christmas is just around the corner and with it the traditional time of cutting down the Christmas tree. This year, the “Our Forest” association once again invites you to lend a hand yourself on the third Saturday of Advent, December 13th. The event takes place on Kohlenstrasse between Grillenberg and Wippra, where participants can choose from a selection of Christmas trees. Eberhard Nothmann, the chairman of the association, points out that the area with Nordmann and coastal firs has now been grazed.

For all those who still don't want to miss out on a tree they have cut themselves, there is a second area, which is located in the back section of the Kohlenstraße in the direction of Gorenzen. Only blue spruce trees are waiting for their new owners there. So nothing stands in the way of Christmas fun, even if the selection is somewhat limited.

Early demand for Christmas trees

The demand for Christmas trees does not go unnoticed in the region. Florian Deiters, owner of the Borgert nursery, can confirm that demand this year is already comparable to 2019. Large trees between two and 2.50 meters are particularly in demand, and customers also seem to be heading out earlier to secure their tree. However, Deiters cannot yet estimate whether the total number of buyers has increased or whether they are just bringing forward their purchases.

The weather plays a significant role here - lots of rain and cool temperatures benefit the trees. Deiters also gives a practical tip: If you leave your tree in the net and place it in water, you can avoid evaporation. A dash of sugar in the water can also provide the trees with small nutrients.

Alternative to classic shopping

Norbert Jentsch from the Gottschling tree nursery explains the early demand for Christmas trees as a possible alternative to classic shopping. Jentsch emphasizes that there are enough trees available - both from our own cultivation and purchased. The trees have grown well and Nordmann firs even have deep roots and sufficient water. In contrast, blue firs had a slightly harder time.

An interesting observation: the size of the Christmas trees hardly plays a role this year. Trees between 12 and 20 feet are also in demand, and many people choose to use larger specimens as outdoor decorations to provide light and color in the dark seasons. Jentsch suspects that the early willingness to buy is also due to the desire to lighten the mood a little in the dark times. This is how festive decorations take place and the anticipation of Christmas increases in the region.
