Querfurt Castle: New café and observation tower – a step into the future!
In a lively meeting today, district council chairman Andrej Haufe took the time in the Ständehaus in Merseburg to present the plans for Querfurt Castle. With 32 of 55 members, the district council had a quorum and was ready to make important decisions. The main items on the agenda were the construction of a new restaurant in the old donkey stable and the renovation of the historic “Dicker Heinrich” observation tower. MZ reports, that the original plan to convert the donkey stable into a large restaurant for 1.5 million euros was scrapped due to economic concerns.
After careful consideration, the district council agreed on a “small restaurant”: a café is to be built in the donkey stable, which will burden the budget with 751,000 euros. The remaining funds will be used for the renovation of the Dicken Heinrich, which costs an estimated 1 million euros. The federal government is contributing 433,000 euros - the district will replace the missing funding from the state. The renovation work on the tower is scheduled to start next year, while the café operations are planned for 2027.
Opinions and concerns
The debate in the district council brought different opinions to light. The CDU representative Christian Raschke expressed concerns about the long-term management of the catering industry and called for a clear list of priorities for the projects. “We are not against the measures, but good planning is the be-all and end-all,” said Raschke. MZ documented that AfD parliamentary group leader Hans-Thomas Tillschneider also expressed his dissatisfaction with the simplified café solution and called for a comprehensive concept for the castle.
Outlook for the future
What happens next? The new catering area could not only be an attraction for visitors to the castle, but also create new jobs and boost the local economy. The renovation of the Dicken Heinrich also promises a view over the city and leaves a lasting impression on guests. Given the challenges associated with the catering industry, it remains to be seen whether the plans can actually be implemented.
The fact is: preparations for the coming years are in full swing and if everything goes according to plan, we can look forward to a new social place in Querfurt Castle in 2027. An exciting time lies ahead and we can look forward to seeing how developments unfold there.
