Divorces in Saxony-Anhalt: decline with unexpected exceptions!

A look back at divorces in Saxony-Anhalt shows an interesting picture: In 2024, 3,029 divorces were recorded, which means a decrease of 3.9 percent compared to the previous year. This development is particularly noteworthy because it is about a quarter below the level in 2015 nachrichten-heute.net reported. This suggests that divorce law in Saxony-Anhalt has apparently become a little more stable in some good ways.

But the decline is not evenly distributed: in independent cities there was a 6.7 percent increase in divorces in the same period, while the numbers in the rural districts fell by 7.5 percent. The development was particularly striking in Dessau-Roßlau, where there was a dramatic increase of 50.6 percent to 116 divorces. In Halle (Saale) 409 divorces were registered, which corresponds to an increase of 5.4 percent, while in Magdeburg only 13.3 divorces per 10,000 inhabitants were recorded - slightly below the national average of 14.2.

Statistics in detail

In detail, 2,180 divorces were recorded in the districts of Saxony-Anhalt last year, which corresponds to a decrease of 7.5% compared to 2023. Numbers have fallen in most districts, with the exception of Mansfeld-Südharz, Stendal and Anhalt-Bitterfeld, where increasing numbers have been recorded. The latter has the highest rate with 16.6 divorces per 10,000 inhabitants, followed by Stendal (15.5) and Mansfeld-Südharz (15.4). In contrast, the Saale district ranks lowest with 9.0 divorces per 10,000 inhabitants.

The surveys not only cover heterosexual marriages, but also take into account divorces between same-sex couples. Same-sex marriages have been possible in Saxony-Anhalt since October 1, 2017, after previously registered civil partnerships were legally recognized since August 2001. The statistics are drawn from the data provided by the Saxony-Anhalt State Statistical Office and thus offer a clear overview of developments in the area of divorce in the region statistic.sachsen-anhalt.de clarified.

Demographic changes in focus

From a demographic point of view, Saxony-Anhalt continues to be required to deal with the challenges of change. The demography portal of the state of Saxony-Anhalt emphasizes that the 2024 microcensus provides insights into how children grow up and the living situations in the region. At the same time, the topic of demographic change is being widely discussed in order to promote social cohesion and take advantage of opportunities.

The state is committed to funding such as the Engagement Fund 2025, which can support neighborhood engagement with up to 2,500 euros per project. These initiatives are essential to create community spaces and strengthen social bonds. In Blankenheim in the southern Harz, for example, a formerly overgrown area was converted into a central location for events.
