Saxony-Anhalt: 4.9 million euros for schools to combat learning deficits
On September 26, 2025, Saxony-Anhalt took significant steps to improve the educational landscape in the state's schools. How the Hall indicator reports, schools will be provided with additional financial resources to make independent decisions and specifically reduce learning gaps. This initiative is financed from the Corona special fund and could make a decisive contribution to closing the educational gaps caused by the pandemic.
The additional budgets will not only be extended at short notice, but schools will also have a flexible personnel budget available, which will be expanded to all types of schools. This allows you to involve external partners for important support offers such as working groups, homework help and projects with extracurricular learning locations. A total of around 4.9 million euros was made available for this. Education Minister Jan Riedel emphasizes the importance of these funds for educational work and sees them as a great opportunity to relieve the burden on the teaching team and to provide targeted support to the students.
Learning deficits due to the pandemic
But why is this step so important? The corona pandemic has caused a massive learning backlog, the consequences of which can be felt throughout Germany. According to a report by Deutschlandfunk More than 1.6 billion students had to stay at home temporarily during lockdowns in over 190 countries. A comprehensive analysis shows that students lost around 35 percent of normal learning progress in the first few months of the pandemic, with the largest gaps in science subjects.
There are increasing fears that these gaps can no longer be fully closed and that inequalities in the education system will continue to increase. Higher-income families in particular have benefited from greater access to learning resources such as computers and the Internet, while disadvantaged children often remain disadvantaged. This reopens the question of educational equity, which has been heavily debated during the crisis - particularly how the Federal Agency for Civic Education notes, it has been shown in many areas that these inequalities have been increased by digitalization.
Opportunities for everyone!
The efforts for additional budgets in Saxony-Anhalt are a first step in the right direction. With targeted catch-up programs that pay particular attention to disadvantaged children, some light can perhaps be shed on the darkness of educational inequality. In addition, school budgets can be used not only for tutoring, but also for new teaching formats or ongoing training for teachers. This not only helps the students, but also the teachers, who have to oscillate tolerably under the circumstances.
With these measures, Saxony-Anhalt shows that it is not standing idle in the face of the challenges of the education system, but is actively working on solutions that can benefit both teachers and students. Because one thing is clear: children's education is important to all of us - and only together can we ensure that no child is left behind.
