Saxony-Anhalt: Employees change jobs faster than ever before!

Working life in Saxony-Anhalt is undergoing noticeable change: as current reports show, employees now have a shorter stay with their employers than they did a decade ago. At the end of 2024, the average duration of an employment relationship was just 54.8 months, while in 2014 it was an impressive 60.2 months. This development is closely linked to the economic and structural changes that the labor market has experienced in recent years. Loud MDR The Federal Employment Agency has determined that the length of stay is understood as an indicator of the stability of employment relationships.

But why is it that so many employees are changing jobs right now? Experts attribute this to the changed economic conditions. In times of economic uncertainty, as we are currently experiencing, there is surprisingly a lower tendency to change jobs, which is also confirmed by the chairman of the management of the Halle regional directorate, Markus Behrens. In such crisis situations, people often cling more tightly to their existing job.

Industry-specific differences

The differences in length of stay are sometimes enormous and depend heavily on the industry. For example, employees in the public sector stay at a job for over 97 months significantly longer than in temporary employment, where the average length of stay is only 9.3 months. This data sheds light on the challenges across different sectors:

  • Leiharbeit: 9,3 Monate
  • Gastgewerbe: 24,1 Monate
  • Öffentlicher Dienst: mehr als 8 Jahre (97,4 Monate)

For further differentiation: skilled workers stay in the same company for an average of 60.2 months and specialists even stay in the same company for 68.3 months. In comparison, helpers only have a stay of 30.2 months. It is noticeable that women and full-time employees generally work longer with one employer than men and part-time employees. These aspects are important to better understand the dynamics in the labor market.

Outlook into the future

Given this development, the question arises as to how employers can react to more frequent job changes. In order to retain talent, it may be necessary to improve working conditions and show employees prospects. Employers are required to have a good hand in keeping younger skilled workers in the company in particular in the long term. If the trend continues, it could have long-term negative effects on the stability of many companies in Saxony-Anhalt. The labor market is constantly changing and it will be exciting to see what measures companies will take.
