Saxony-Anhalt: Safe start to school in 2025 – police and ADAC warn!
As of today, August 11, 2025, the new school year begins for many students in Saxony-Anhalt. This school year, a total of 213,829 children will attend schools in the state, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year, when there were still 214,300 students. These preliminary figures from the Ministry of Education will be finalized on September 17th MDR reported.
The number of schools in Saxony-Anhalt is 860. Despite the declining number of students, the provision of lessons remains pleasing at 93.6 percent in the new school year. The state government's goal is to increase this to 103 percent. The diversity of schools is relatively high in the three independent cities and medium-sized centers in Saxony-Anhalt; However, in less densely populated areas the situation is completely different.
School route safety in focus
A big topic that is brought up again and again before the start of school and during the new school year is safety on the way to school. Around 18 percent of children aged 10 to 17 express concerns about their safety on the way to school. Given the increased traffic around schools, especially in the morning, this is an alarming figure that requires action.
The ADAC has therefore put together some tips on how parents can improve the safety of their children on the way to school. This includes training the way to school with the children, specifically practicing crossing dangerous streets and, if necessary, taking detours for safety reasons. It is also advisable to avoid parent taxis as dangerous maneuvers are often observed. Parents should also act as role models by wearing appropriate clothing and using reflectors to improve visibility.
The police have already announced that they will increase their presence in front of schools to ensure greater security. Motorists are reminded to drive carefully and obey parking restrictions. In the Harz district, for example, warning banners have already been set up in Badersleben and yellow footprints in Westerhausen for orientation purposes. In Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the public order office is also planning additional controls to punish incorrectly parked cars.
Availability of schools and routes to school
Another important aspect is the availability of schools. The Saxony-Anhalt State Statistical Office has updated an interactive map application that shows school locations as well as data on traffic accidents and public transport connections. Parents can easily find out which schools are available nearby and how long the journey is for their children. For students from Wallwitz, for example, the nearest secondary school is in the town of Wettin-Löbejün, approximately 8.5 km away as the crow flies.
In addition, attention is paid to the safety of the route to school. Traffic accident statistics are included in the school atlas to identify road sections with an increased number of accidents. In Halle (Saale), for example, school children should prefer to use side streets to avoid the dangers on Große Steinstrasse, where accidents with personal injuries have already occurred in 2022, such as Magdeburg clicks reported.
