Drunk drivers in Aschersleben and Bernburg – drastic controls!
Several traffic controls recently caused a stir in the Salzland district. Monday evening was a dramatic evening for three road users who were under the influence of alcohol. Already on Judith-Resnik-Strasse in Aschersleben, the police pulled a 39-year-old driver out of traffic who smelled alcohol on his breath. A voluntary test revealed an alarming 1.57 per thousand. The driver's license was confiscated and a blood sample was taken. After measures were taken at the Aschersleben Clinic, the man was finally released, although under the impression of his serious violation.
A 44-year-old e-scooter driver was caught on Annenstrasse in Bernburg and his drug test was clearly positive. He was also banned from continuing his journey for 24 hours and fine proceedings were initiated. Despite initially refusing to consent to a blood sample, emergency responders ultimately had to take it before he was released.
Another worrying example
The dangerous game continued on Tuesday morning: In Schönebeck, the police checked a 38-year-old cyclist who was riding his bike in serpentine lines through Friedrichstrasse. The result of the breath alcohol test was shocking - 2.11 per mille. Here too, measures were initiated which led to his discharge after a medical examination at the Calbe Clinic.
The frequency of such incidents has already been the subject of various studies. A study carried out in Hamburg found that e-scooter drivers are particularly likely to drive drunk. Statistics show that 9.6% of traffic violations there are caused by e-scooter drivers. Over 76% of these people had a blood alcohol concentration of over 1.10‰. Notably, the average BAC of the e-scooter riders examined in this study was 1.3‰, as reported by PMC.
Awareness and prevention needed
The Federal Association against Alcohol and Drugs in Road Traffic (BADS) emphasizes the need for awareness campaigns and the promotion of traffic education. A large number of e-scooter drivers are male, and many crimes occur at night, especially on weekends. Measures and awareness-raising are necessary to reduce the potential danger of drunk driving and to improve road safety in cities like Cologne.
Based on this data, it is clear that both drivers and e-scooter riders face serious consequences if they drive while under the influence of alcohol. In view of this situation, it is to be hoped that cities will continue to carry out patrols and make citizens aware of the dangers of drinking alcohol in traffic, because “there is something to be done” for safe road traffic regulations.
