Burglary in Aschersleben: Brave tenant drives perpetrator out of apartment!

In the early hours of Monday, June 16, 2025, a serious break-in occurred in an apartment building in Aschersleben. At around 5:30 a.m., an unknown perpetrator gained access through a closed but unlocked front door on Feldstrasse. In the hallway he came to three apartments, whose doors he opened with a key stuck in the lock while the residents were sleeping peacefully. MZ reports that The burglar took jewelry, debit cards, car keys and cash.

The situation became alarming when the tenant in the third apartment noticed the intruder and began to scream loudly. This caused the perpetrator to flee towards the city center. The man was dressed in dark clothing, wearing black sweatpants and a gray sweater and a mask. What is interesting is that the perpetrator spoke in regional German, suggesting he may be from the area. The police have already been informed and forensics have begun their work to collect information about the fugitive perpetrator.

Focus on burglary crime

The issue of burglary crime is not new, with reports pointing to a worrying trend. In Germany, around 119,000 thefts from or in apartments were registered in 2023, with around 77,800 being classified as residential burglaries. Statista found out that the number of burglaries has increased in the last two years and has reached the highest level since 2019.

There is a high risk of burglary, particularly in urban areas such as Bremen and Hamburg. While the clearance rate for residential burglaries is only 14.9%, experts emphasize the importance of preventative measures. Police chiefs in various cities are facing challenges as crime statistics show worrying increases. Lutz Müller, the police chief of Bremen, recently stated that the numbers for the north of Bremen have increased in the context of other crimes. Weser-Kurier reports of an increase of 220 burglary cases last year and an overall increase in crime.

Combat measures

In order to counteract the increased number of burglaries, Müller is thinking about forming a new focus team. A decision should be made before Easter as to whether a special commission for residential burglaries will be set up. However, the lack of police personnel is an obstacle to the creation of such measures. Müller also plans to closely analyze the burglary statistics from the first few months of the year and develop concrete strategies to improve security.

The worrying developments of recent years illustrate how important a safe home is. Every break-in is not only a material loss, but also a violation of privacy and a significant intrusion into the personal sense of security of those affected. It remains to be hoped that through increased police measures and public awareness, fewer people will become victims of burglaries in the future.
