IT crisis at AMEOS: Clinics across Germany with great challenges!

On Monday evening, July 9, 2025, a massive IT disorder struck the Ameos Groups, which affects all German clinics. The effects are clearly noticeable in Saxony-Anhalt, where the hospital network has 11 locations. The technology has identified the problem, but the time of the fully remedy of the disorder is still unclear, as MDR

The patient care remains secured, but rescue control centers in Saxony-Anhalt can only start a limited extent. There are also restrictions on X-ray and laboratory examinations, which is an additional challenge for numerous patients. Annually, Ameos treats more than 500,000 patients in their over 100 institutions in Germany.

restrictions in supply

In recent years, IT security in healthcare has become a central topic. In view of the rapidly increasing cyber attacks on IT infrastructures in clinics that could potentially endanger human lives, it becomes clear how important solid IT systems are. An example from the past is the famous ransomware attack in 2016, which was able to impair vital functions of devices in hospitals, as [Johner's institute] (https://www.johner-institut.de/blog/regulatory-affairs/it-sicherheit-im-gesundeschewatern.

Although the problem at Ameos has been identified quickly, the implementation of new security measures in many clinic companies is often inadequate. The investments in IT are usually low, which leads to weak infrastructures and insufficiently trained staff. For example, EU law demands that operators of health institutions have the latest software developments that correspond to the latest security standards.

A look at the Ameos clinics

Ameos is one of the larger private clinic operators in German -speaking countries and is in direct competition with other large providers such as Helios and Sana. With over 18,000 employees, the clinic group is active in more than 50 locations, including institutions in cities such as Aschersleben, Bernburg, Haldensleben, Halberstadt and Schönebeck in Saxony-Anhalt. In view of the restrictions experienced and the uncertain duration of the IT failure, the focus on the urgency of investments in IT security becomes even clearer.

In summary, it is to be hoped that those responsible at AMEOS will get the problems under control as soon as possible and that measures will be implemented for long-term safety and stability of the IT systems. After all, the consequences of insufficient IT infrastructure could not only endanger the operation of the clinics, but above all the care of the patients.
