Student competition in Saxony-Anhalt: Bringing flood history to life!

In Saxony-Anhalt, Environment Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) is urging students to deal intensively with flood events. As part of a newly launched competition, students will be given the opportunity to bring flood memories to life while using an important learning platform. The corresponding details about the initiative could already be heard yesterday in Magdeburg.

The competition aims to have participants research high water marks on various structures such as bridges, churches and homes. This includes documenting damage, conducting interviews with contemporary witnesses and presenting the results in creative formats such as photo series, videos, reels or collages. Such activities are intended to help raise awareness among younger generations of the challenges posed by extreme flood events and keep memories alive. All students from the 7th grade are eligible to take part, and the competition runs until February 15, 2026. Those interested can find further details in an article by n-tv.

Special focus on environmental education

With this initiative, the state government is responding to events that have come into focus again and again, especially since the devastating flood disaster in 2002, when many cities such as Prague, Dresden and Bitterfeld were affected. Environmental schools offers important approaches to dealing with the causes and consequences of such natural events and encourages people to question their own responsibility in dealing with resources. Dealing with flooding is not just seen as an individual challenge, but as a topic that should connect numerous disciplines. It is a shared responsibility to take action in both ecological and social areas.

One aspect of the project is also the question of how people can protect themselves from such disasters and what role education plays in this. When dealing with flood disasters, the focus is not only on restoring the existence of those affected, but also on imparting knowledge in order to avoid future damage.

Additional events and opportunities

Interested schools and kindergartens can also look forward to another exciting event: Explore Science in the Elbarenpark Magdeburg from September 25th to 27th, 2025. This event, organized by the Klaus Tschira Foundation, will once again invite the young generation to engage with natural sciences and technology. The focus is on workshops and hands-on stations, with the motto “Future MINT” playing a key role. Registrations for the free workshops are already possible and the deadline for the competitions is September 1, 2025. Information about this is available on the website Education LSA available.

Whether in the area of environmental education or at exciting MINT events - it is the responsibility of schools and teachers to support young people and actively involve them in the issues of our time. This means they can not only better understand the challenges that natural disasters bring, but also proactively deal with them. This commitment could not only have a direct impact on future generations, but also make a valuable contribution to addressing the challenges facing our environment.
