Baufusch in Osterburg: Citizens call for immediate elimination!

In the city of Osterburg in the district of Stendal, there are major problems after completing the construction work as part of the broadband expansion. Work has been underway for months, but numerous defects cause resentment among the residents. Like Volksstimme reported, citizens complained about dangerously poorly paved sidewalks in June.

The city administration has given the construction contract to private telecommunications companies, a common practice, which, however, is not without risks. The building manager Matthias Köberle emphasized that the city has the right to control the work of the companies. Despite several on-site appointments to check the quality, the situation has remained unchanged. Complaints about the non -compliance with contract details and the use of inferior building material are increasing.

construction defects and their consequences

The defects cannot be overlooked: joints between the cat's throats in the wide street had to be reworked, but the surfaces at the objects that are objectionable are currently temporary. A specific point in time for the complete improvement is still pending. Köberle said that delays in the procurement of materials also complicate the process. So far, there are no complaints about working with the construction companies, which allows things to do something, but the inadequate paving work remain a great nuisance.

By the way, the problem is not just a Cologne phenomenon. Cities in Hesse, such as Bad Salzschlirf, fight with similar consequences of the fiber optic expansion. Here, residents complain of broken sidewalks and damage to streets caused by the construction. Mayor Matthias Kübel reports of a patchwork of different materials and coverings that do not match, which leads to general displeasure. This fact is according to Hessenchau that appears in many municipalities.

The challenges of fiber optic production

The difficulties in fiber expansion are therefore not an isolated case. A comprehensive analysis of PWC shows that Germany lags behind in international comparison, both in the number of connections available and at the speed of expansion. Complex approval procedures and a lack of specialists put a strain on the projects. By mid -2024, only 43% of households will be opened to fiber optic connections at the property boundary in Germany, which looks extremely weak compared to other European countries. According to a PWC survey, only 24% of households actually prove a fiber optic connection, while only 11% have activated it. This development could be regarded in the long term as a serious threat to the competitiveness of the German business location.

How it goes on remains to be seen. The city of Osterburg has the opportunity to influence, but without a fundamental problem solving at a broader level, progress in fiber optic expansion in the entire region will remain rather slow. The challenges are clear, and it seems that better management and more control over the commissioned companies are urgently needed.

In the meantime, it is important for the citizens to be careful. The problems that the fiber optic expansion entails are not only a nuisance, but also represent a potential risk of accidents. The city was asked to ensure solutions as quickly as possible, while the telecommunications providers have to take their responsibilities seriously.
