Equal opportunities in focus: Conference on gender equality in Stendal
Differences in pay and equal opportunities will still be pressing issues in the world of work in 2025. This will become clear once again at the upcoming conference “Altmark – Social & Fair” on September 20th in the Stendal district office, as reported by landkreis-stendal.de. District Administrator Patrick Puhlmann opens the event at 10 a.m., where experts from a wide range of areas will discuss the challenges of gender equality together.
The topics of the conference will focus primarily on the question of equal pay for equal work. Particular attention is paid to the regional and supra-regional comparison between East and West as well as urban and rural regions. Further aspects deal with the reality and utopia of equality in the world of work.
Expert panel and discussions
The conference program not only includes exciting lectures, but also the opportunity for the audience to actively participate in the discussion. Experts like Annett Montes de Oca and Dr. Ulrike Spangenberg will shed light on gender-related inequalities. Another highlight is the lecture by Katrin Skirlo, DGB regional manager, who focuses on the current skilled worker situation.
Afterwards, cabaret artist Sunna Huygen, known for her ironic look at gender roles, will offer a finale and share her experiences as a former carpenter. The event is not only informative, but should also be entertaining so that participants can look forward to the afternoon.
The current status of equal opportunities
However, equal opportunities is not just a topic of the conference. In fact, a 2020 study by the German Institute for Economic Research shows that around 30 percent of LGBTIQ* employees experience exclusion in their everyday work, with this figure even being over 40 percent for trans* people. This discrimination shows how far there is still to be an inclusive work culture, according to inqa.de.
Since 2006, there have been laws in Germany that prohibit discrimination based on sexual identity. Nevertheless, many employees, especially those on the LGBTIQ* spectrum, consider coming out at work to be a risky matter. Companies that actively promote diversity can achieve a lot with a clear corporate culture and appropriate training for managers and employees.
Equality reports and gender segregation
In addition, gender-specific segregation in the labor market is a current problem. As described in the report by bundesstiftung-gleichstellung.de, the gender differences in pay remain alarming. Despite progress in equality, there are serious discrepancies that should constantly be the focus of research and political discussion.
The conference in Stendal is an important step towards more equal opportunities. It offers a platform to not only learn, but also to actively work on solutions. The audience has the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas with the speakers, which can give new impetus to the debate about equality. The “Sustainability Weeks”, which run until October 8th, also place an important emphasis on social issues and the importance of gender equality in the Altmark.
