Massive rail construction stop: Hamburg-Berlin replaced by 173 bus routes by 2026!

The railway line between Hamburg and Berlin, one of Germany's most important connections with a length of 278 kilometers, has been completely closed since August 1, 2025 due to extensive renovation work. How developmentcity.de reported, the closure will last until April 30, 2026. Deutsche Bahn took part in this major project to renew tracks, switches, bridges and overhead lines, which should sustainably improve the quality of traffic.

During the construction work, the ICE and IC trains were rerouted via Stendal and Uelzen, which extended the travel time by at least 45 minutes and didn't exactly cause much enthusiasm. However, 173 replacement buses are used daily in regional transport and are operated by the Ecovista company. Around 500 new drivers were hired specifically for this transition phase so that commuters' mobility does not come to a complete standstill.

Replacement transport for commuters

The buses run on 28 routes in six federal states, although the capacity utilization can vary greatly. While demand is high in Berlin's suburbs, the situation is often different in more rural regions. However, in the first few days there were problems such as overcrowded buses and insufficient information for passengers. However, the railway took action and set up additional weather shelters and seating at the stops. Sanitary containers with toilets were also installed at various locations to offer travelers a little comfort during transfer times.

The closure represents a significant logistical challenge for commuters from Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Many have already found alternative ways to get to work, be it through home office, carpooling or their own shuttle solutions. With the impending end of the summer holidays and the start of school, the burden on replacement traffic is expected to increase.

Investments in the future

This extensive general renovation of the railway line is part of a larger infrastructure package from the federal government. How tagesschau.de reports, the government is planning to invest a total of 166 billion euros by 2029, of which 107 billion euros will flow into rail. The aim is not only to renovate ailing routes, but also to renew over 40 heavily used routes in Germany, including the Hamburg area. A comprehensive traffic concept has already been developed and will soon be presented to the public.

The train stations along the route will also be modernized and some will be expanded into “train stations of the future”. Improvements in train information and route guidance are on the agenda to provide travelers with a better experience.

The renovation work is certainly challenging, but it is in the best interests of passengers and the regional economy. All the more reason now is to get through the coming months well and hope for a future-proof railway.
