Tourism boom in Saxony-Anhalt: guest numbers are rising sharply!
There is something to be happy about in Saxony-Anhalt: tourism increased noticeably in April 2025. According to that Hall indicator A total of around 282,800 guest arrivals and almost 706,900 overnight stays were recorded. This is an increase of 5.2% in guest arrivals and 7.8% in overnight stays compared to the previous year. What is particularly pleasing is that the majority of holidaymakers, namely 93.3%, come from within Germany. Here too there was an increase of 4.6% in arrivals and 8.2% in nights.
The international public has also shown more interest in the region: the accommodation providers were able to record an increase of 14.0% in guest arrivals and 2.0% in overnight stays. Compared to April 2024, a total of 1,031 accommodation establishments were open last month, which is due to the brisk demand.
Early summer, camping and holiday apartments
Bed occupancy increased to 31.7%, compared to 29.8% in the same month last year. The average length of stay was 2.5 days and has therefore increased slightly; last year it was 2.4 days. Campsites and holiday apartments were particularly in demand: camping accommodations recorded a remarkable increase of 54.7% in guest arrivals and 57.8% in overnight stays. There was also a positive development in holiday apartments with 48.5% more arrivals and 35.0% more overnight stays.
Although the overall numbers look promising, there are also areas with declining trends. Training homes and recreational and holiday homes in particular suffered a decline in guest arrivals. The numbers here show -38.8% and -14.1%.
A look at the first months of the year
In the period from January to April 2025, the overall situation looks slightly different: guest arrivals here were just under 842,000, which corresponds to a decline of 0.2%. Overnight stays also fell by 2.3% compared to the same period last year, at 2,060,000 nights. This information is part of a comprehensive monthly tourism survey that collects data from accommodation establishments with at least ten beds. The Statistics Saxony clarifies that this also includes campsites that must offer at least ten pitches.
The challenges that the tourism sector continues to overcome contrast with some of the successes achieved. Although there were positive signals in April, accommodation providers, especially those specializing in training and recreation, need to refine their offerings to better meet future challenges.
