A look at Cohen's career
The formation of Hermann Cohen began at the high school in Dessau and led him to the Jewish theological seminar in Wroclaw and the universities in Wroclaw, Berlin and Halle to high philosophical reputation. Between 1876 and 1912 he was a professor of philosophy at the University of Marburg. His students included prominent characters such as the Russian writer Boris Pasternak and the German politician Ernst Reuter. Cohen formulated numerous important works on the interpretation of Kant and Jewish issues and is considered one of the most important Jewish philosophers of his time.
Cohen was also known as a critic of Zionism and saw Judaism not limited by national borders, but as part of a temporal, moral mission. His connection to the Jewish identity was complex and undogmatic. So there is a Hermann-Cohen-Straße in Tel Aviv, a sign of its lasting track in the world of ideas.
If you want to learn more about this impressive philosopher and your work, you cannot avoid this conference. Hermann Cohen's teachings are not only a journey into the past, but also an invitation to confront with contemporary challenges. We look forward to lively interest and a stimulating exchange on June 27th!
