New handbook on climate education: teachers in focus!

In a remarkable initiative to promote climate education, a new handbook created by researchers at the University of Hamburg and other institutions was published today. This handbook is aimed not only at teachers, but also at educational actors, decision-makers and researchers and is intended to help develop interdisciplinary approaches to conveying climate knowledge. Loud idw online The handbook includes basic terms and concepts of climate education as well as didactic perspectives and practical teaching impulses.

A central concern of the handbook is to clarify the requirements for successful climate education based on psychological research results. Interdisciplinary questions about climate education and disinformation are also addressed. The handbook also addresses the implementation of climate education, for example using the example of climate schools in Germany, which are increasingly coming into focus.

Background and origins

The handbook was created directly as a result of the petition “Climate crisis in the science curricula – now!” from 2022, which was able to collect over 4,000 signatures and received broad support from various professional associations. The initiators are pursuing the goal of anchoring climate education as a central cross-sectional topic in the education system. The editors of the handbook, including Dietmar Höttecke and Helge Martens, are convinced that sound climate education is essential for the future.

With forewords by prominent scientists such as Harald Lesch and Ilona M. Otto, the handbook builds a bridge between theory and practice and is therefore a valuable tool for everyone working in the field of education. The handbook will be published by Springer VS in 2025 and will be available both as an eBook and soon in printed form.
