The changing public: Conference in Halle on fake news and filter bubbles!

In the coming week, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) will become a science hotspot. FromNovember 20-22, 2025The annual conference of the research focus “Enlightenment-Religious-Knowledge” takes place there. Outstanding minds from Germany, Switzerland and the USA will gather under the motto “Change in the public sphere in the past and present”.

From the filter bubble to fake news: the conference addresses the central challenges that are currently shaping our public sphere. The focus is particularly on the problems surrounding hate speech and the pressing question of the extent to which these elements endanger the credibility of public discourse. Prof. Dr. Theo Jung and Prof. Dr. Daniel Weidner, the organizers of the event, emphasize that it is important to examine alternative ideas about the public in the past in order to highlight their relevance for the present. “There is something going on” – that also applies here, because the analysis of this public crisis is of great importance for social discourse.

A look at the program

The keynote speech by Prof. Dr. deserves special attention. Lucian Hölscher, who amNovember 20th at 6:15 p.mwill take place in Lecture Hall II of the Steintor Campus. His lecture entitled “The Ethics of the Public” promises a deep insight into the moral dimensions of the discussion.

The conference will present research results from various areas, including literary, media, social and cultural studies. The topics range from theoretical approaches and historical perspectives to the active shaping and visualization of the public. The plenum will also raise the question of how we can influence the forms of communication and general conditions of the public today.

Open doors for those interested

The venue is the building at Franckeplatz 1, House 54, IZEA, in Halle (Saale), where interested parties have the opportunity to follow all contributions and exchange ideas. The detailed program is available online at idw-online.de.

Especially in times when the public is under pressure, it is important to address these issues. The upcoming conference in Halle will certainly open up new perspectives and encourage people to think about the changes in public communication.
