Revolution in road traffic: Intelligent tires are coming soon!
Yesterday, November 7th, 2025, something happened in the world of mobility that should make drivers and car enthusiasts very excited. Intelligent tires that automatically adapt to different weather and road conditions could soon be available in German markets. This innovative technology not only promises to make the annoying bi-annual tire change easier, but also increases safety on the road.
Although there is no fixed winter tire requirement in Germany, many neighboring countries have already put them into effect since November 1st. The aim of this regulation is clear: to increase road safety during the cold months. The new smart tires could play a key role in this. For example, they automatically change their shape - when it rains, they become narrower to minimize the risk of aquaplaning. In addition, extendable spikes could be used in snow and ice and eliminate the need for snow chains or socks.
Advantages of the new technology
The benefits of these smart tires are promising. Not only do they offer a change in width when wet, but they also adapt to snow conditions and ice layers. This adaptability not only optimizes grip on the road, but also increases comfort while driving. However, despite this promising innovation, the tires are not currently on the market and there is no known release date or price yet.
It is important to know that in Germany winter tires are mandatory in winter conditions such as black ice or snow. If you don't comply, you risk a fine of 60 euros and one point in Flensburg. From October 1, 2024, only tires with the Alpine symbol (3PMSF) may be used. Older M+S tires that were produced before 2018 are no longer allowed to be used in winter, which could result in corresponding penalties. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, although experts recommend at least 4 mm.
Tire changing intelligence
An interesting aspect is the parallel with human intelligence. According to the Wikipedia Intelligence is defined as the ability to acquire, use information and solve problems. This definition can also be applied to the development of intelligent tires. These “smart” tires learn to adapt to circumstances, making them an excellent example of applied technology. As in the case of human intelligence, which consists of various abilities such as logic, abstraction and creativity, these tires combine different technologies to respond to the challenges of driving.
Let's take a look outside the box: There are now on eBay with the Merchant Integration Platform (MIP) an easy-to-use sales platform that makes it easier for small businesses and large retailers to effectively manage and sell their inventory. Smart tires represent an exciting future for drivers. Whether for safety or comfort – the coming months could bring a lot of changes. Stay tuned!
