Storm Ziros unleashes chaos: 35 fire brigade operations in Wittenberg!
A violent storm caused chaos in the Wittenberg district and parts of Lausitz on Monday, June 23, 2025. The storm “Ziros” caused more than 35 weather-related deployments by the fire department, as mz.de reported. The district spokesman Alexander Baumbach informed that the urban area of Lutherstadt Wittenberg was particularly affected. Here the emergency services had to go out no less than nine times to remove fallen trees and fallen branches from streets and paths.
The storm reports should not be underestimated: between 9:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. there were numerous cases in which fallen trees blocked the roadways. A remarkable operation by the Pretzsch volunteer fire department took place at 5:55 p.m. when a tree blocked the road between Körbin and Neu. After about 25 minutes, the emergency services were able to reopen the road.
Power outages and other damage
The situation in Plossig was particularly dramatic when a tree fell into the power line at around 6:07 p.m. The fire brigades from Plossig, Hohndorf and Lebien had to arrive here together with the electricity supplier SWL Annaburg and remained on duty until 8:26 p.m. There were also problems in Möhlau: a tree that fell on a power pole caused a forest floor fire and a power outage. In Ruhland, a fallen tree caused damage to a telephone line and also a power outage. Fortunately, everyone involved remained uninjured, even when a tree fell onto a truck trailer, as lr-online.de adds.
The exact number of missions in Lusatia, where the storm also raged, has not yet been conclusively determined. However, as everywhere else, the main culprits were fallen trees, which were often impassable. Fortunately, the railway lines in the region were spared damage.
Storm warnings and forecasts
As far as the weather situation is concerned, the Unwetterzentrale warned of storm and hurricane conditions. The warnings are divided into advance warnings and acute warnings, with the latter being issued in three warning levels based on the intensity of the expected wind gusts. These detailed forecasts are critical for many industries, from construction to agriculture to event organizers that rely on weather conditions.
Overall, the storm “Ziros” clearly shows how important it is to prepare for sudden changes in the weather and that you can never rely on calm weather conditions. The fire brigade's deployment was a true community project, which in these heated times shows once again that the helpers are always there when you need them.
