Wittenberg's butterfly park closes: tropical butterflies on a winter journey!

On November 3rd, 2025 the time has come: the Alaris Butterfly Park in Wittenberg will close its doors for the winter break. After a successful year with around 35,000 visitors, it is high time for the over 700 tropical butterflies to retreat to their winter quarters in Emmen, the Netherlands. The colorful diversity of over 40 species is carefully packed and monitored in cooled Styrofoam transport boxes. During the transport, the butterflies become paralyzed from cold, only to dance through the air again after their arrival at the zoo. The park is expected to reopen its doors at the end of March 2026.

What makes Alaris Butterfly Park so special? With an illuminating selection of over 140 species, many of them home-grown, the park is one of the most renowned butterfly parks in Germany. In comparison, the Trassenheide butterfly farm on Usedom has the largest area with 5,000 square meters and up to 60 species, while the butterfly house on the island of Mainau houses around 1,000 animals. The Maximilian Park in Hamm impresses with the largest butterfly house in North Rhine-Westphalia, which presents around 80 tropical species.

A look at other butterfly parks

Friends of the colorful fluttering animals can also look around in other regions of Germany. The Allgäu butterfly adventure world in Pfronten is known for the Atlas moth, one of the largest butterflies in the world. In Vienna there is also a charming butterfly house at the Burggarten, which is considered a place of peace and relaxation. These wonders of nature are not only beautiful to look at, they are also important parts of our ecosystem.

For the next few months it’s time to “wait for spring”. The butterflies in the Alaris Butterfly Park can look forward to their stay at the Emmen Zoo. A new home and the opportunity to fly will be waiting for them there. Another year full of colors and splendor of wings awaits us from March 2026.
