Planting trees for the future: Saxony-Anhalt calls for participation!

A large tree planting campaign is scheduled for November 2025 in Saxony-Anhalt, which will actively involve both environmentally conscious citizens and nature. The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt has allocated a budget for the planting of 10,900 seedlings. The aim of this initiative is to compensate for one's own CO2 footprint and thus make a contribution to climate protection.

The planting campaigns take place at various locations, including Seehausen, Cröchern, Oschersleben (Hohes Holz), Wernigerode and Lutherstadt Eisleben. Volunteers are welcome to volunteer and can look forward to a shared lunch. The planting dates are as follows:

  • 8. November 2025: 10 Uhr, Stadtwald Seehausen
  • 15. November 2025: 10 Uhr, Cröchern
  • 22. November 2025: 10 Uhr, Wernigerode
  • 22. November 2025: 10 Uhr, Oschersleben (Hohes Holz)
  • 29. November 2025: 10 Uhr, Lutherstadt Eisleben

Various reforestation measures are already taken into account during the planting campaigns. Around 3,000 trees are to be planted in Seehausen to reforest the area after a fire in 2018. Cröchern plans to underplant 1,500 old pine stands with hardwood species, while Wernigerode will plant 1,500 trees to renovate forest areas after storm and bark beetle damage. Oschersleben (Hohes Holz) will reforest a damaged mixed deciduous forest area with 2,900 new trees, and 2,000 trees are planned in Lutherstadt Eisleben to promote ecological diversity and soil protection.

Important considerations for CO2 compensation

Despite the positive approach, there are critical voices about the effectiveness of tree planting as a climate protection measure. A discussion about the usefulness of tree planting is conducted in the context of carbon offsetting, where concerns about control and transparency are highlighted. The impression of a modern indulgence trade is making the rounds as many seek a quick way out of their emissions without giving up environmentally harmful habits such as driving or flying.

In this context, it is not only crucial to plant trees, but also to ensure that they are preserved for years and do not end up in monocultures. The long-term effectiveness of CO2 storage in young trees is often questioned. Critics emphasize that companies should first reduce emissions before relying on offsetting measures - a point that is often lost in marketing communications.

However, the tree planting campaigns in Saxony-Anhalt could be a step in the right direction if they also highlight the need for reductions. Anyone who wants to reduce their own CO2 footprint can not only get involved, but also become active and support the initiative.
