Construction site chaos in Saxony: patience required for travelers!

In Saxony, the signs are on construction sites: travelers and drivers will have to prepare for numerous restrictions on motorways, federal highways and railway lines in the coming months. The construction work aims to improve the safety and performance of the roads and railways. A lot of work will be done and renewed on the A4, A17 and A72 motorways in the coming months, which will require patience.

There is a lot of work going on, especially on the A4. In the Wilsdruff area, the roadway will be resurfaced until December, with three lanes remaining open. However, the Wilsdruff exit towards Aachen will remain closed until the end of the year. There is also preparatory work for renovations between Limbach-Oberfrohna and Chemnitz-Mitte as well as between Glauchau-West and Hohenstein-Ernstthal. Another bottleneck is the Königshainer Berge tunnel, whose south tube will remain closed until the end of 2025 while traffic flows through the north tube.

Current construction sites and their influences

There is also no stopping on the A72 near Chemnitz: the roadway will be resurfaced between Chemnitz-Süd and the Chemnitz junction by December. The Chemnitz-Süd and Chemnitz-Rottluff junctions are temporarily closed. Construction work is also underway on the A17 between Pirna and Bahretal, which will result in changed traffic routing in both directions from mid-August to the end of October.

The federal and state highways are also not neglected. In Leipzig, the B2 on Messeallee will be renewed by October. Torgau benefits from new cycle lanes and a fresher road surface on Warschauer Straße (B182). Renovations are also pending in Geithain (B7) and Marienberg (B171). In Aue (B283), construction work will continue until spring 2026, while the Dittersdorfer B180 will be renovated by the end of the year. In Görlitz, repairs are being carried out on the bridge on Girbigsdorfer Straße.

Rail connections interrupted

Rail travelers are no less affected: the route between Dresden Old Town and Freital Ost will be closed to traffic from November 7th to 11th, which will be compensated for by buses as replacement services. Furthermore, travelers between Leipzig and Dresden must expect longer journey times from mid-September to mid-December. Regional trains don't stop everywhere here, which makes additional planning necessary.

In Görlitz, the platform hall, which is over 100 years old, is being renovated, while in Hoyerswerda it is being converted to provide barrier-free access by 2027. These measures also aim to sustainably improve the transport infrastructure in Saxony.

However, as the experts emphasize, the quality of roads in Saxony remains largely good to very good. Despite the ongoing construction sites, which often lead to bottlenecks, Saxony's five motorways - including the A4, A14, A17, A72 and A38 - ensure smooth transit traffic to our neighbors in Poland and the Czech Republic. The future renovations promise to improve not only safety, but also traffic conditions for the numerous freight transports.

It is important for drivers to remain cautious, especially in the affected areas: the risk of slipping, poor visibility and traffic disruptions can all too quickly lead to unexpected situations. It is therefore advisable to always keep yourself informed about the current traffic situation in order to reach your destination in a relaxed manner. The construction work is necessary, but it is a test of patience for all road users, which will hopefully soon pay off.
