Adventure on four wheels: Three men test the VW ID.3 to Naples!
What do you do when a cult film from 1991 with Wolfgang Stumph and Marie Gruber needs a new edition? Exactly, you do what was shown in the comedy "Go Trabi Go", and that in two ways: with an old Trabant and now also with a modern electric vehicle. For the new road trip of three young men from Großröhrsdorf-Jim Schwarz, Timo Binge and Tommy-Lee Drechsler-the focus is not only on freedom on four wheels, but also the testing of electric vehicles.
In 2024, the three friends made an adventurous trip from Germany to Naples with a classic trabant that mastered the 4,000 kilometer route without much breakdown. Now, almost 35 years after the first part, you have announced that you are starting a new tour. This time it goes with the VW ID.3 GTX , and electrically! Volkswagen provides the three hobby adventurers of this state-of-the-art electric vehicle to test the long-distance suitability and charging infrastructure of electric cars. A route of 2,000 kilometers in 7 to 9 days is planned.
a trip into the unknown
The starting shot for the tour is given on July 18. The men, all of them from the ride, have devoted themselves to the challenge with an unconventional approach: stays in the tent, because in the ID.3 itself there is no way. As then, a literary element was established in the travel planning; Inspired by the figure Udo Struutz from "Go Trabi Go", consider taking Goethe's "Italian trip" as a travel sample. VW Communication Manager Christian Sommer sends good wishes to the brave travelers at all times.
But what is behind the ID.3? At first glance you could think that it is the new star in the electric car world. The VW ID.3 has a range of up to 600 kilometers with a battery size of 79 kWh. With just 10 minutes of loading time, you can already recharge 205 kilometers. In a , however, the ADAC also showed its dark sides. While the vehicle performs properly and has a good range, there were some technical weaknesses in handling.
A look at the technical details
The VW ID.3 is the first fully electric model of VW and the pioneer in the manufacturer's e-car world. With over 100,000 kilometers in the long -term test, the vehicle confirmed a stable battery state of 93%. It also offers average consumption that can vary greatly depending on the weather. At the ADAC, the vehicle recorded a consumption of 13 kWh/100 km in mild temperatures, which can quickly rise to up to 30 kWh/100 km in winter. With a price of 48,550 euros as a new car, the ID.3 is traded as an electrical counterpart to the VW Golf.
If you look at the interior, it quickly becomes clear that more appealing materials have been processed here than in the predecessor. Interior cladding offers a noticeable improvement in the quality of stay and the noise backdrop in city traffic also proves to be pleasant. From CHIP come positive feedback on the seat arrangement and space that convey an upscale standard-even if the fund passengers have a little less space. The countdown runs to the tour, and the curiosity of Jim, Timo and Tommy-Lee is growing. Perhaps the trip will not only be an exciting adventure, but also a further step into the future of electrical mobility.
