Alarm in the Mockritz natural pool: cercariae ensure closure and discount!

Last week, the Mockritz natural pool in Dresden made a name for itself. The reason for this was the increased occurrence of cercariae in the water, which led to the pool being closed for two days. Dresdner Bäder GmbH acted quickly and used a chemical-biological agent in the bank areas to defuse the situation. After the treatment, the water was clear again in the morning and the pH value was within the normal range, which was positive news for visitors. The pool was soon able to open its doors again and surprises guests with a halved entrance fee! MDR reports that...

Although the pool has reopened, cercariae, which are larvae of a type of fluke, are still present in the water. These little critters can cause “swimming dermatitis,” although this is harmless to humans and does not occur in every visitor. The colloquial term “duck dermatitis” is particularly explosive because waterfowl are preferred hosts for these larvae. However, there is an all-clear for little water lovers: the conventional children's paddling pool and the Kneipp facility are not affected by the problem.

Blue danger in the dams

But the worries about the water don't end at the Mockritz natural pool. Blue-green algae were also detected in the Koberbach dam and the Bautzen dam. These algae blooms have been causing problems for bathers in the Bautzen dam since the beginning of July. Health authorities are urgently warning about the dangers of swimming in the affected waters. Blue-green algae can cause nausea, diarrhea and vomiting as well as irritation of the skin, mucous membranes and eyes. Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Anyone who thinks that the problem only affects humans is wrong: bathing animals are even at risk of poisoning. MDR reports that...

In summary, while the Mockritz natural pool has responded to the cercariae with a clever approach and remains accessible to a wider audience, bathers in the dams should be careful and take the warnings of the health authorities seriously. Summer has many joys, but it also requires increased vigilance!
