Asylum Home in Wehrsdorf: Shocking hygienic conditions lead to closure!

Wehrsdorf, Deutschland - In Wehrsdorf, the events have gotten quickly: the asylum home was closed due to serious hygienic defects. Like Saxon, there were above all bed bugs and scrambled stations, that made the closure necessary. These hygienic grievances have been known since the end of 2024 and were repeatedly reported by refugee helpers. The health department stated during recent controls that infection chains were no longer understandable.

Problems that led to retreat

The hygienic conditions were further denounced during the controls in March and May 2025. The kitchens were dirty, the sanitary facilities in a desolate state and water damage and mold were already obvious problems. Defective or even missing beds questioned the minimum of necessary equipment. Painful for the affected residents: Despite multiple requests from the Bautzen district to remedy these defects, many of them have not been fully remedied. "Eye contact Wehrsdorf", a local refugee aid group, sees the closure as inhuman and reports of even worse conditions in an adjacent asylum home in Kamenz.

The direct influence on the residents and the reactions of the operators

In total, around 70 people of different nationalities lived in the home before the closure. These were moved to other facilities at short notice on the day of the closure. The operator, the IF Social Services gGmbH, referred to the fact that he took the defects seriously and that all the necessary measures had taken to remedy. One vehemently contradicts the reasons for closure and sees the termination of the operating contract without notice.

The reactions of the authorities initially remained vague. The Bautzen district office first commented on direct media inquiries and outlined the hygienic grievances without immediately going into detail. According to reports, some residents slept on the ground because they had not bed for cultural reasons. The picture that emerges here makes the care doubt for these people in need of protection. According to MDR , repeated reports have ultimately led to the sharpest measures.

Where does the path lead for the future?

The district of Bautzen has indicated that it wants to concentrate more on your own facilities in the future, as the asylum numbers decrease accordingly. This U -turn could be an opportunity for improvements, but also raises some questions: How does the administration want to ensure in the future that such abuses will not appear again? The need is there and the standards must be raised accordingly in order to accommodate people in need of protection in a worthy environment. In this context, reference is made to the minimum standards for the protection of refugee people in accommodations that are summarized in a document of the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth and serve as guidelines to improve the framework conditions for accommodation BMFSFJ

The closure of the failed asylum home in Wehrsdorf is a wake -up call for everyone involved: the Situation on site urgently has to change so that humanitarian standards are preserved and the people affected receive the support they need.
