Construction work at Hoyerswerda train station: completion delayed by a year!
The Hoyerswerda train station, a central rail transport hub, has been modernized since November 2022 for an impressive 21 million euros. However, the work, originally scheduled for completion in the summer of 2026, has been delayed by a full year. As the Wochenkurier reports, the reasons for this are numerous challenges in the construction industry, in particular the need for renovation of the foundations and platform edges.
Problematic conditions
The construction workers didn't have it easy. Unexpected problems have arisen during ongoing work, significantly hindering progress. When the platform surface was dismantled, it became apparent that both the edges and the foundations needed to be fundamentally renewed. In addition, the support feet of the platform roof are more corroded than expected, which requires additional measures. Meanwhile, difficult geological conditions also make the piling work for the new passenger underpass complicated, as explained on mdr.de.
Modernization for accessibility
The aim of the extensive modernization work is to not only make the Hoyerswerda train station more modern, but also to make it barrier-free. Numerous new features will be added, including elevators, new roofs, LED lighting and ample seating. In addition, a new pedestrian underpass will be built, which will be equipped with a blind and information system. Deutsche Bahn reports that platform 3/4 will probably not be open to passengers until summer 2027.
Construction process and outlook
The current construction plans stipulate that platforms 1 and 2 will remain closed until the end of March 2026. Until this point, all trains will depart from platform 3/4. The next construction phase on platform 3/4 will begin from April 2026 to summer 2027, including the elevator shaft and the second section of the new passenger underpass. This section will then provide access to Platform 1/2, which meets the new accessibility standards.
The implementation of these measures will be carried out within the framework of the guidelines of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, such as bmv.de explained. Deutsche Bahn has set itself the goal of providing unhindered access for all travelers, especially people with disabilities - a task that is becoming increasingly urgent given the increasing number of disabled people.
All in all, Hoyerswerda is waiting for a modern train station that not only meets current needs, but also the requirements of a barrier-free future. A real advancement that all travelers are eagerly awaiting!
