Construction site opening in Bautzen: Prefabricated building becomes a modern dream home!

On June 28, 2025 in Bautzen it will be “Welcome – come in!” For anyone who wants to take a look behind the scenes of urban development, the doors to a prefabricated building construction site on Kurt-Pchalek-Straße are opening. On the occasion of Architecture Day, those interested can experience the modernization of a residential building from 1989 up close. The Bautzener Wohnungsbaugesellschaft (BWB) has launched an exciting renovation project that not only preserves the historical character of the building, but also creates modern, sustainable living space.

The conversion includes exciting additions, including balconies and elevators, as well as the expansion of the attic. A great opportunity for anyone interested in architecture and urban development!

Sustainability in focus

The project in Bautzen is in line with an overarching trend that gives new meaning to the preservation and upgrading of prefabricated buildings in the former GDR. More and more cities, such as Leipzig, are thinking about how existing buildings can be used more efficiently. There, the city is planning to demolish an old technical town hall, while the Association of German Architects is vehemently advocating for reuse of the existing building structure. “With sustainability and carbon footprint in mind, preserving the existing buildings is a valuable approach,” reports MDR.

The attempt to transform old prefabricated buildings into modern living spaces reflects the change in mindset - away from demolition and towards sustainable use. The city administration in Leipzig is currently discussing the options in order to possibly decide on the future of the Technical Town Hall at the council meeting in the first quarter of 2025.

Prefabricated buildings in cultural memory

The example of Bautzen and the discourse about prefabricated buildings are not only relevant locally. In Berlin, the residential area on Wilhelmstrasse, which was built between 1987 and 1992, is remembered. Important personalities like Günter Schabowski lived there. The state curator Christoph Rauhut described it as an important building block in the competition between political systems. These buildings are listed buildings and have largely been preserved in their original condition, which underlines their historical value. You can find out more about this at Time.

At a time when the focus is increasingly on preserving and modernizing prefabricated buildings, Bautzen invites citizens to get to know the architecture that still exists. Architecture Day will therefore not only be an event for those interested, but also a step towards a more conscious approach to the urban building fabric in East Germany.
