Bridge on the B97: Major expansion for more safety for cyclists!

The Saxony State Directorate has given the green light for the renewal of the B97. The first step involves the construction of a bridge structure, which will be tackled in the next few months. This measure is part of a comprehensive renovation that has spanned more than ten years. The section between the German House in Bernsdorf and Großgrabe has already been gradually renewed. Now the focus is on continuing towards Schwepnitz. Andreas Biesold, the former head of the Bautzen branch of Lasuv, had predicted in the past that building rights for the section between Großgrabe and the S93 would not be expected until the end of 2025 at the earliest, which has now become reality. This news was published in a detailed report by saechsische.de.

But what exactly does this new building project involve? The plan not only envisages a new roadway, but also a sidewalk and cycle path alongside the road, which will increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This infrastructure is particularly important because until now cyclists and pedestrians had to share space with car traffic. This was explained in detail by the State Directorate of Saxony. As part of the project, the intersection of the B97 and the S93 will be redesigned to improve clarity and traffic safety.

Important details about the construction project

The section of the B97 to be renewed is around 1.2 kilometers long and extends northeast of Schwepnitz to just behind the entrance to Großgrabe. The existing roadway will have two 3.50 meter wide lanes and 1.50 meter wide shoulders. A one-sided pedestrian and cycle path will be created separately from motorized traffic. In addition, the State Office for Road Construction and Transport, Bautzen branch, will take over the sponsorship of the construction project. The documents will be officially displayed in the communities of Arnsdorf, Schwepnitz and Oßling, with the exact times and locations being announced publicly.

As part of the nationwide special “City and Country” program, investments are also being made in cycling infrastructure. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of cycling, which is to be achieved through greater safety and better conditions. This program is part of the Federal Government's 2030 Climate Protection Program and includes, among other things, the development of comprehensive, separate cycling networks. This is also being promoted in our region through measures such as the construction of new cycle paths and bridges, as can be read on the website of the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food.

The upcoming construction work on the B97 shows how important the expansion of the transport infrastructure is for our region. We are all the more excited about the positive developments that will be created by these projects and hope that the work will begin soon.
