Drug testing and shoplifting: Zittau in the crime spotlight!
What is happening in eastern Germany? A look at current events in the region shows that both traffic and shops are busy.
On July 1, 2025, a strange incident occurred in Zittau. A 47-year-old Pole was caught shoplifting when he stole goods worth around 130 euros. After the confrontation with the employees, he tried to escape, but the police quickly caught him. A drug test came back positive for amphetamine, which led to identification and questioning medienservice.sachsen.de reported.
But that wasn't the only incident in the region. Also on the same day, the motorway police discovered several violations of the overtaking ban on the BAB 4. During a check between 7:50 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., a total of six road users, including a Macedonian, a German, a Russian and three Poles, had to pay heavily.
Traffic stops and accidents
There was also a drug test on the motorway in which a 40-year-old Pole was caught driving his BMW with cannabis in his blood. His trip ended with a blood sample being ordered. These incidents show that increased attention is required in road traffic.
On the same day there was an accident on the BAB 4. A 76-year-old woman crashed her Skoda into a warning beacon and a tractor-trailer. Fortunately, she was uninjured, but the damage to property amounts to around 600 euros. Such incidents are not isolated, as the speed controls in Bautzen show. More than 3,000 vehicles were measured there between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., 201 of which were driving too fast.
Crime and attempted fraud
An 86-year-old lady in Bischofswerda, who was involved in an attempted fraud, was particularly shocked. She should pay 1,000 euros to get a profit of 38,000 euros. But an attentive relative informed the police in good time so that the money could be prevented from being handed over. This makes it clear how important it is to be careful with such offers.
Two Simson mopeds, worth a total of around 5,000 euros, were also found on the list of stolen goods in Häslich. The police have already started investigations. This theft is one of the many crimes that are unfortunately increasing in the region as the population grows and feelings of security diminish.
Finally, it should be noted that worrying incidents continue to occur in both transport and retail. The police are called upon and citizens are well advised to be vigilant and report any unusual situations. Everyone can contribute to increasing security in the region.
