Investigations into the arson attack on the Spreehotel Bautzen have been temporarily suspended
In a still tense situation surrounding the issue of refugee accommodation, the Görlitz public prosecutor's office has temporarily closed the investigation into the arson attack on the Spreehotel Bautzen asylum seekers' home. How Radio Lausitz reported, the crime could not be proven for the only accused. The results of the investigation were not sufficient for an indictment, so the case was closed for the time being. However, authority spokeswoman Irene Schott emphasized that the investigations will be resumed as soon as new approaches emerge.
The arson attack occurred on October 28, 2022, shortly after the break-in at the former hotel when windows were smashed. At this time, four workers were sleeping in the building and fortunately were uninjured. The damage caused amounts to around 300,000 euros. The 38-year-old suspect was targeted by investigators about a year later, but the investigation remains incomplete. It is worth mentioning that the Spreehotel Bautzen was the target of a similar attack in 2016, in which three young men were sentenced to suspended sentences.
A right-wing extremist background?
The background to the attack is explosive. Loud RND The investigators assume a xenophobic motive. The attack took place shortly before the first refugees were announced to move into the Spreehotel. Despite the preliminary discontinuation of the investigation, the proceedings are still ongoing “against unknown persons” and the authorities have already commissioned increased patrols to prevent further arsons.
In a broader context, it should be noted that politically motivated crimes against refugee accommodation are increasing in Germany. The taz reports that 218 cases have already been registered in 2024, representing an increase of 51 cases compared to the previous year. These offenses include, among other things, dangerous acts of violence that have already resulted in injuries, including to children. This reveals a worrying trend in society that cannot be ignored.
A look into the past
The Spreehotel is not an isolated case. Since 2015, numerous attacks on accommodation for refugees have been documented in Germany. What is particularly striking is that an attempted arson attack with Molotov cocktails on the former hotel took place in 2016, which luckily failed. Thirteen young men were convicted of this failed attack in 2019. Such incidents fuel fear and uncertainty in the affected communities.
The situation surrounding refugee accommodation remains precarious and the political landscape could play a decisive role. As the taz highlights, the AfD could achieve a significant number of votes in the upcoming federal election, which could further influence social sentiment. The pressure on the authorities to ensure safety in the accommodation increases with each further incident.
Although the investigation into the Spreehotel case has been discontinued, the question of safety for refugees in Germany and social acceptance remains urgently relevant. It remains to be hoped that new approaches will be highlighted in the investigations and the unrest in society will be reduced to a minimum. Protecting the most vulnerable members of our society should remain a top priority.
