Radibor Church of the Cross: Renovation brings new shine to this historic pearl!

In Radibor, a charming town near Bautzen, the renovation work on the old and historic Kreuzkirche is in full swing. This church, which dates back to the 14th century, was first mentioned in 1397 and was built by Sigismund Behr, a councilor from Bautzen. After its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt in 1652. As the Saxon reported, the work to preserve the Kreuzkirche is located at an intersection between the streets to Luppa, Camina and Luttowitz.

The focus of the renovation is on replacing the roof tiles, while the roof structure itself remains largely intact. However, the facade needs a longer drying phase before it can be renewed. The benches and altar are currently being dismantled and stored on a community member's property. It remains unclear how long the entire renovation work will take, as the amount of salts contained in the masonry influences the time frame.

History of the parish

The Kreuzkirche is part of the Catholic parish of Maria Rosenkranzkönigin, which is one of the oldest parishes in Upper Lusatia. This special community consists of Sorbian-speaking and German-speaking believers who have been gathering here since the 13th century. The first chapel was mentioned around 1270, with people previously holding services in Bautzen. Church services are celebrated in Radibor every day in the Sorbian language, and on Sundays they are held in both languages Parish website reported.

The renovation of the Kreuzkirche also includes improvements that will benefit visitors. The conditions for funeral ceremonies are optimized by making both side entrances usable and the front benches equipped with heaters. In addition, the sound technology will be updated so that people without a fixed place can also take part in the service. The total costs of the renovation amount to 270,000 euros, of which 100,000 euros come from funds from the leader region of the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape. The last comprehensive renovation took place in 1888, and the last color design in 1994, as shown in the information kirchbau.de can be read.

While the renovation work progresses, the funeral services will take place in the old parish church until the Kreuzkirche shines again in its full splendour. These measures are evidence of the community's commitment to preserving Radibor's cultural and historical treasures and making them accessible for future generations.
