Radeberg remembers: This is what food was like in GDR times!
The gastronomic scene in Radeberg has an eventful history, which showed its very special facets, especially during the GDR era. Today, July 7, 2025, we take a look at the restaurants and culinary experiences that once brought people together here.
The Forsthaus in particular was a popular meeting place during this time, where the Radeberger Pilsner, which was not available everywhere at the time, was freshly tapped. Roland Schmidt, entrepreneur and Free Voters city councilor, has many memories of the catering industry in Radeberg, which was not only a place for good food, but also represented the soul of the community. “The prices were low due to government subsidies, which made the restaurants attractive to citizens,” explains Schmidt. A small beer cost only 51 Eastern pfennigs, while a large one went for 1.03 Eastern marks.
Culinary journey through time
Maria Franke, a Radeberger native from the very beginning, remembers the over 40 restaurants that offered a culinary paradise before the war. "The spring was particularly popular for family celebrations. People celebrated life here," she says. Home-style dishes such as roulade and Kasseler were on the agenda. However, international cuisine was only available in the nearby city of Dresden. The only exotic option was a Ketwurst, which was considered the GDR's answer to the American hot dog and was very popular.
During the time of scarcity, the waiters in restaurants were a powerful authority. They determined where and how long guests had to wait, which is very different from today's hospitality. According to the price ranges, guests were usually limited to simple dishes, while better restaurants often could not guarantee the availability of food, as the example of the so-called price ranges shows.
Tradition meets modernity
Nowadays, the Kaiserhof restaurant pampers its guests with a mixture of tradition and modern flair. The hospitable world of experience not only offers an unforgettable ambience, but also Saxon classics and regional specialties, freshly tapped Radeberger Pils and Zwickelbier. A summer in the beer garden here can be a very special experience where you can enjoy warm hospitality in the most modern form. So gastronomy lives on in Radeberg, even if many old traditions have given way.
Radeberg remains in memory as a place full of stories and culinary experiences that continue to resonate to the present day. While the city continues to develop, memories of that time are literally a matter of taste - in one or two restaurants you can still find what you're looking for when it comes to keeping tradition alive.
