Students run for a good cause: 1,735 euros for social projects!
A very special sports day for grades 5 to 8 was held today at the Léon-Foucault-Gymnasium in Hoyerswerda. On this exciting day, the students took part in the “genialsocial – your work against poverty” action day. It wasn't just about physical exercise, but also about a good cause. The students collected rubber bands to record the number of laps they ran while traveling on a circuit of over 400 meters. Some participants managed to run up to 27 laps, like the hard-working Elias from 7b, who set this impressive record.
The special highlight of this sporting event was that 50 cents were donated for every lap run, not only by the students, but also by teachers and parents. In total, a proud amount of 1,735 euros was raised, which will now be distributed among various beneficiary social institutions. The recipients include the Bautzen women's shelter, the Awo children's and youth center Hoyerswerda and the Lausitzer Werkstätten - each institution receives more than 570 euros, which is great support. This campaign was made possible by numerous sponsors who willingly provided drinks, fruit and ice cream. A special thank you goes to Henry Gbureck from the “Leckstation” ice cream parlor, who also contributed to the refreshment and this social commitment.
High number of participants and positive response
The participating students were not only impressed by the amounts collected, but also by the high number of participants, which, according to student council representative Lea (10a), was highlighted as extremely gratifying. The response to the sports day was consistently positive, which shows that the idea was well received. The school principal Elisabeth Szeguhn emphasized the commitment and cohesion of the school community, which is an important aspect of such events.
At the start of the next school year, the school is planning to give other grades the opportunity to take part in this special run and make their contribution.
A look at funding in Saxony
Parallel to this event, the “genialsocial” campaign also has an impact beyond the school walls. The initiative is aimed at non-profit, social or charitable associations in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Brandenburg, which can apply for project funding. The funding amount ranges from 50,000 to 120,000 euros and the projects are designed to last between one and three years, starting in autumn 2024. EineWelt-Sachsen reports that criteria such as collaborative partnerships, sustainability and gender equality play a crucial role.
Applications must be submitted by January 31, 2024 at the latest, and various materials are available to help applicants. This is particularly important because Saxon students read and evaluate the application documents, which makes understandable wording advisable.
Overall, it shows that not only the school community in Hoyerswerda, but also the extensive support for social projects in the region work hand in hand to combat poverty and promote social cohesion. The Education Foundation adds that there are numerous other projects in other federal states that are supported in a similar way.
