Mayor Karsten Vogt (CDU) and finance mayor Robert Böhmer (independent) engaged in a heated verbal exchange. The conflict was triggered by an audit report that Vogt had commissioned to check staffing in the city's daycare centers.
The result of this audit revealed that more educators were employed than permitted, in addition to the legal requirements. These irregularities caused the city council to ask Böhmer to comment on the additional expenses. However, the finance mayor defended the overcrowding with the argument of “additional educational needs”. The debate arose here about who can make decisions about staffing in the daycare centers. Vogt emphasized that such decisions belong in the hands of the city council.
Climate change in the town hall
The tensions between the two mayors have developed into a serious power struggle that not only concerns the protagonists themselves. Although Vogt emphasized that no current decisions or processes in the administration have come to a standstill due to the dispute, the lack of clarity about Böhmer's future in office is still a sensitive issue. When asked, the finance mayor did not comment on the conflict, which makes the situation appear even more mysterious.
Bautzen under pressure
The mixed situation has now also taken hold of the thoughts and conversations among city administration employees. The possibility of a special city council is being discussed to defuse ongoing tensions. But the question remains as to how those responsible in the city can resolve the internal dispute as quickly and non-violently as possible.
