Fatal accidents in Bautzen: Police are looking for witnesses after a hit-and-run!

In the last few days there have been some high-profile traffic accidents and criminal incidents in the region around Bautzen that should put local residents on alert. On Thursday evening there was a worrying incident on the A4 near Ottendorf-Okrilla. A previously unknown vehicle changed lanes and hit a tractor-trailer, forcing a Ford Galaxy against the guardrail. Fortunately, there was no material damage of around 10,000 euros and fortunately no one was injured. The police are now looking for witnesses who can provide more information about the fleeing vehicle Sächsische.de reported.

Another incident occurred near Großröhrsdorf, where a 62-year-old Skoda driver aquaplaned off the road and crashed into the guard rails. Damage amounting to 40,000 euros was caused, but the driver remained uninjured. In such devastating conditions, driver vigilance is particularly important.

Vandalism and thefts

But the situation wasn't just tense in traffic. In Bautzen, unknown people broke into a cellar and stole seven cans of fish. The damage amounts to 50 euros, while the property damage is around 35 euros. In another break-in in Ottendorf-Okrilla, beer, potting soil and toilet paper worth 690 euros were stolen.

Citizens' sense of security also suffers from vandalism activities. In Hoyerswerda, a bus stop was daubed with anti-constitutional symbols, causing material damage of 100 euros. State security is investigating to prevent future incidents.

Traffic and drug problems

The topic of traffic accidents is not only discussed locally. At the federal level, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) is planning changes to the regulations on traffic accident escapes. These are intended to simplify the reporting of accidents without personal injury. The introduction of a digital reporting point is being considered, which will make it easier for those injured to access the data of the person who caused the accident, as ADAC.de report. In particular, an expansion of “active remorse” for accidents without personal injury is being considered, which is currently not legally covered.

Road safety is also a hot topic at the federal level, as current statistics show. In 2023, there were over 2.5 million traffic accidents in Germany, which cost 2,839 lives. More than two thirds of these accidents occurred in urban areas, often involving cyclists and pedestrians. With the “Vision Zero” initiative, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport is pursuing the goal of reducing traffic fatalities by 40 percent by 2030 and is investing in preventative measures BMV.

The high number of drug traffic offenses is particularly worrying. In a more recent case, a 23-year-old driver in Hoyerswerda was tested for cocaine and opiates. Looking at such developments, it is clear that both police and citizens need to be vigilant to ensure safety on the streets.
