Storm warning: Expect heavy rain and squalls in Saxony!
The weather situation in Germany is currently causing great unrest, especially in Saxony, where heavy rain is expected this afternoon. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a level 3 out of 4 warning for parts of Saxony, particularly for the lowlands of the Bautzen and Görlitz districts. The warning applies from Monday at 2 p.m. until Tuesday night and also includes the cities of Dresden, Meißen as well as Central Saxony and Saxon Switzerland. There can be acute risks of flooding here, while meteorological forecasts indicate rainfall amounts of between 20 to 50 liters per square meter, and locally up to 70 liters are possible.
There was already an initial premonition of the impending storms with the temporary closure of Autobahn 72 in Vogtland due to flooding. The lanes between Reichenbach and Treuen had to be temporarily closed both in the direction of Zwickau and in the opposite direction. The A72 is particularly affected, as it was completely blocked at times, while the left lane remains sporadically closed. Drivers should be particularly careful here as there is a risk of aquaplaning and landslides.
Extreme weather hits Germany
But Saxony is not the only region affected. Extreme rainfall is also expected in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin. Here, the DWD has issued the highest warning level, particularly for the areas between Rostock and Stralsund and parts of the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. The forecasts indicate rainfall amounts of between 80 to 140 liters per square meter, which is around twice the normal rainfall in July. Such massive amounts of rain are reminiscent of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley.
People in these areas are urged to take precautionary measures. In Rostock in particular, citizens have been asked to find out more about the city's warning app. In Western Pomerania-Greifswald, the municipalities are preparing for the extreme weather with reinforced control centers.
Events affected
The weather is already having an impact on cultural events: A planned open-air concert by Robbie Williams in Berlin had to be postponed due to the weather; the new date has now been set for Wednesday. The concert by opera singer Anna Netrebko at the Gendarmenmarkt also had to be canceled, although the replacement date is still unclear.
The situation in the coming days will remain tense, as the heavy rain is expected to last until Tuesday afternoon. Drivers and pedestrians should avoid flooded areas and adapt their behavior on the road to avoid risks. The DWD urgently warns against rapid flooding of streets, underpasses and basements.
Overall, the upcoming storms pose numerous challenges for the entire region. Increased vigilance and caution are essential.
