Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution: AfD politicians under fire for right-wing extremist statements

In May 2025, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) brought the entire Alternative for Germany (AfD) into the headlines when it classified the party as “certainly right-wing extremist”. Despite a subsequent legal dispute, the BfV has now given a standstill promise and will no longer publicly label the AfD as such until a court decision is made. In the meantime, however, the BfV's assessment of the content remains unchanged. According to the Sächsische, the report that justifies this assessment comprises a remarkable 1,100 pages and sheds light on the internal Structure and development of the AfD.

Several prominent AfD politicians came into the focus of the BfV. Tino Chrupalla, member of the Bundestag and district councilor, is viewed critically for his xenophobic statements. He recently sang the controversial song “We’re deporting them all!” at an election party. took place and did not distance itself from xenophobic behavior. Karsten Hilse, a member of the Bundestag, is also criticized. His comments about supposed “mixing” of races attracted a lot of attention. Jörg Urban, AfD state chairman in Saxony, was denounced for his discriminatory statements about migrants and the “great exchange” thesis, while Sebastian Wippel, state parliament member and district councilor, was held responsible for legitimizing the term “revolkung”. Wippel also linked the influx of people seeking protection since 2015 with an increase in violent crime.

The legal steps and their consequences

However, the BfV's commitment to stand still does not mean that the authority has changed its critical stance. The BfV will only list the AfD as a suspected case until a court decision is made, which does not completely rule out the use of intelligence means, but increases the hurdle for doing so. This decision is no coincidence; The AfD already defended itself against the previous classification under tax law, which ultimately failed in two instances. According to the Tagesschau it is unclear when the responsible court in Cologne will decide on the current lawsuits.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution confirmed that the AfD was based on a three-year audit and a comprehensive report that documented the disregard for human dignity within the party. Despite the commitment to stand still, doubts about the party's internal demarcation from humane positions still remain. The AfD itself sees the legal developments as exoneration of its allegations, but the allegations remain.

Right-wing extremism as a worrying phenomenon

The current discussion about the AfD comes in the context of an alarming rise in right-wing extremist activity in Germany. In 2024, more than 50,000 right-wing extremist people were counted, which means an increase of 9,650 people compared to the previous year. These figures, prepared by Verfassungsschutz, also show that the number of registered right-wing extremist crimes rose to 37,835 in 2024 - an increase of a whopping 47.4% compared to 2023.

The social situation shows that right-wing extremist demos and statements are increasingly focusing on issues such as asylum, migration and queer people. The number of right-wing extremist violent acts is also not negligible, with 1,281 incidents recorded in 2024 - an increase of 11.6% compared to the previous year. These developments illustrate how quickly extremist ideas are spreading and the challenges that arise for society.
