unique opportunity for chemnitz

being a cultural capital offers the opportunity to learn from the positive experiences of other cities. In 2019, the Italian city of Matera was able to experience a unique tourism boost in 2019 as a cultural capital. This is exactly what Chemnitz is now striving to transform his image and present itself as a culturally diverse city. Already 40 years ago, 1985, the concept of the Capital of Culture was launched by the Greek actress and politician Melina Mercouri in order to strengthen the cultural feeling of togetherness in Europe, the NZZ explained in a detailed article.

Germany will now set a cultural capital in 2025 after cities like Berlin (West), Weimar and Essen had this title in recent years. Chemnitz's choice shows that even smaller cities in the European cultural landscape can make a name for themselves. The competition for this title is now a strategic element of urban development that increases not only the cultural but also economic visibility.
