Chemnitz 2025: A year full of culture and European encounters!

What's the big deal in culture? On June 21, 2025, the city of Chemnitz gave the starting signal for its year as European Capital of Culture. This honor is not only a reason to celebrate, but also a wonderful opportunity for Chemnitz to enter the international conversation. Together with the border towns of Nova Gorica and Gorizia, the city in the heart of Saxony will implement numerous cultural projects in the next few months.

The opening ceremony celebrations on January 18th in the Chemnitz Opera House were significantly enriched by prominent guests such as Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer and EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef. A total of 700 invited guests from politics, business, culture and society were expected. A very special highlight was the acceptance of the prestigious Melina Mercouri Prize worth 1.5 million euros by the managing directors Andrea Pier and Stefan Schmidtke of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH. This award was awarded after successful monitoring by the EU Commission.

Unique opportunity for Chemnitz

Being a Capital of Culture offers the opportunity to learn from the positive experiences of other cities. The Italian city of Matera experienced a unique tourism boost in 2019 after being named Capital of Culture. This is exactly what Chemnitz is striving for now, to transform its image and present itself as a culturally diverse city. The concept of the Capital of Culture was brought to life 40 years ago, in 1985, by the Greek actress and politician Melina Mercouri in order to strengthen the sense of cultural togetherness in Europe, the NZZ explained in a detailed article.

Germany will now have a cultural capital for the fourth time in 2025, after cities such as Berlin (West), Weimar and Essen held this title in previous years. The choice of Chemnitz shows that smaller cities can also make a name for themselves in the European cultural landscape. The competition for this title has now become a strategic element of urban development, increasing not only cultural but also economic visibility.

A colorful program for 2025

With the motto “C the Unseen – European Makers of Democracy” Chemnitz would like to set an example for cultural diversity and common European heritage. The preparations and ideas that Chemnitz would like to implement in the coming months are diverse and aimed at different target groups. The Capital of Culture year will be characterized by an extensive program that includes theater performances, exhibitions and many other events. Care is also being taken to include local artists and creative minds to continue making the city flourish.

At a time when European countries often seem divided by differences, the European Capitals of Culture program aims to create a sense of belonging and promote cultural dialogue. Chemnitz has the potential to play an important role here

The city is looking forward to a year full of cultural highlights - whether live in the opera house or digitally for everyone interested. The opening show was broadcast live on MDR television, which further expanded the reach of the events. Press representatives were able to use video material and photos to further spread the fascination of this special year.

Further information about the opening and the planned events can be found on the official website Chemnitz 2025 to find.
