Chemnitz celebrates: Festival Dance Modern Dance inspires in 2025!

Anticipation is simmering in Chemnitz: the city has been named European Capital of Culture 2025 and offers an impressive program, crowned by the “Tanz Moderne Tanz” festival. This year's motto “See the Unseen” promises not only a visual spectacle, but also exciting themes and performances. From June 18th to 21st, 2025, Chemnitz will become the center of contemporary dance, featuring the highlight “Odyssey in C”, which is based on James Joyce’s masterpiece “Ulysses”. Concerti reports that there are contributions from international companies and the Chemnitz Ballet almost every hour - from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with free entry except for the grand finale in the opera house.

The festival is rounded off by a variety of dance performances that take place at historical sites throughout the city. The works not only reflect the cultural diversity of Chemnitz, but also address the challenges of society, such as racism - in the performance “Kyklop”, which takes place at the Karl Marx Monument. Interactive elements and acrobatic performances ensure captivating viewing experiences.

An exciting concept

The festival, active since 2015, not only attracts dancers and artists from all over the world, but also focuses on local audiences. Visitors have the opportunity to choose between various morning events and embark on a literary city tour that includes 18 stations. These are widely spread across the city, which is why it is hardly possible to reach them all in a single day, reveals Chemnitz 2025.

Under the leadership of ballet director Sabrina Sadowska and general director Christoph Dittrich, the application for the Capital of Culture was significantly advanced. A fundamental decision has now been made to build a new theater, the financing of which will be addressed after the summer break - a further step to strengthen Chemnitz's cultural status.

Cultural networking

With Chemnitz as Capital of Culture, a joint European cultural project is also being initiated that aims to promote civil society and form a network of European democrats. Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner, underlined the importance of such projects during the opening of the Capital of Culture, which officially begins on January 18, 2025, under the theme “C the Unseen”. Information about this has been compiled by the EU representation.

Both cities, Chemnitz and Nova Gorica, were awarded the Melina Mercouri Prize of 1.5 million euros for their diverse cultural program. The preparations for the Capital of Culture year promise a variety of events, exhibitions and performances designed to stimulate both local and regional development through cultural activities.

So it remains to be seen what the year 2025 has in store for Chemnitz. One thing is certain: on the occasion of the Capital of Culture, the city will not only be a stage for extraordinary art, but also a place for encounters and exchanges - “C the Unseen” will be more than just a slogan.
